OMG! What Sportsmanship: Italian team punished for fair play?
EDITOR OMG! What Sportsmanship, Italian team punished for fair play?: This past weekend in Italy's Serie B professional league, Reggina defender Carlos Valdeza attempted to kick a ball out of bounds after injuring himself, an act that occurs in soccer all the time.

MLS and Players Union Don't Seem Any Closer to Labor Deal: The gap between where it appears the league is and what the players (and most fans) want, doesn't seem to be getting any smaller. The lack of any progress can't be helping the league attract new players in this off-season, and I wonder how thin the 2010 Super Draft class might be as a result of the uncertainty. I'm not sure exactly what the major differences are behind closed doors, but while the business side of me understands the economics, I just can't seem to get over some of the things MLS players are asked to give up as compared to their counter-parts in other leagues. Tying players to teams even after their contact expires? Barely paying minimum wage? Asking players to give up their traditional 10% share of transfer fees? I agree with the Player's Union boss, Bob Foose, who said in the article linked above "We believe it's now time to take the training wheels off and give MLS clubs the freedom to truly compete against each other and other clubs outside of the league in a manner that is consistent with what occurs everywhere else in the world." I hope we can get there without a work stoppage, but at the same time, I think the players realize this league now has enough international attention and investment interest to feel confident about holding out for major changes. Friday's World Cup draw helped a lot too. Not only will the American soccer system be under the English Media microscope for the next seven months, but the favorable draw should have the US talked about for the first time in the global media and fansphere as a team "expected" to advance out of group play! That ladies and gentlemen is called "credibility". Will MLS risk a work stoppage in the middle of that spotlight to stand up for rules no other league - or fan - in the world will likely see as "right"? The success story in Seattle should also dispel any claims of a bad economy being bad timing for a renegotiation. Seattle proves MLS is not destined to be a 5th tier pro sport, in the US, needing to pinch every penny just to survive. Seattle proves it's all about being in the right markets, and INVESTING in the the right way. Take the training wheels off indeed - just keep the helmet on, and push the kid down the a soft grassy hill.

Digging The New EA Sports Soccer Trainer: Check out this web site I just stumbled over on USSoccer.com If you coach youth under 12 or younger, send the link to all your players (with a glowing recommendation that their parents also subscribe to Potomac Soccer Wire please! [http://www.potomacsoccerwire.com/newsletter]) as a free resource to help them with their skills. There are so many stale coaching DVDs and poorly designed web sites out there by people most of us have never heard of, it's nice to see something produced by a name every American kid recognizes - "E, A, Sports, It's In The Newsletter" :-)

More Bad Sports, Former US Congressmen Fights Coach: Former U.S. Rep. from Mississippi, Chip Pickering said Monday he was standing up for his son after a soccer coach's alleged verbal abuse, but a fight that escalated is now the focus of a police investigation.

Get Updates Faster on Facebook: Is that a good enough bribe to "fan" us on Facebook? We're doing OK having just started a page for PSW the other week. If you use Facebook, please click the above link and become a fan. Every one helps.
