OMG! What a Miss: Rocky Baptiste misses soccer goal from less than a yard: Admit it, you've all done this in training while showboating after walking in on goal alone. Or, how many of you have even gotten on all fours and pushed the ball in with your head, like a human billiards cue? They're the sorts of things we do when we are goofing with friends - to cap off a brilliant or huge stroke of luck. They're soccer's equivalent of "trash talk" on the basketball court, or high-stepping into the end zone from 10 yards out in pointy football. However, don't try this in a game kids! Another angle is always to keep this video around to remind yourself, that no matter how bad of a miss you make at a wide open goal, it really can't get any worse than this - and I'm pretty sure this guy is a better player than most of us.

Uncertainty Looms in MLS: MLS teams such as defending champion Real Salt Lake face a unique challenge this offseason. Since the league and its players have not yet negotiated a new collective bargaining agreement to replace the one that expires on Jan. 31, there's no way to know what rules will apply next season. Uncertainty about the salary cap, in particular, is leading executives such as RSL GM Garth Lagerwey to take a cautious approach.

Preventing Stress Fractures: According to studies published in this month's issue of the journal Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, strengthening your calf muscles may be an easy way to reduce the risk of a stress fracture. Start taking the stairs!

Assistant Girls Varsity Coach Wanted: A little personal plea here. I've just taken the head coaching job in a top high school Program near the border of Loudoun and Fairfax Counties, and need an assistant. I'm looking for someone who I can learn from myself, who can run practice sessions on their own, but is also comfortable in an assistant role and has experience coaching older girls. On paper, I'd say you should have at least a USSF "C" license or equivalent, but it's not an absolute. Interested, or know someone who might be? Just reply to this newsletter or email me directly at editor@potomacsoccerwire.com.

Get Updates Faster on Facebook: Is that a good enough bribe to "fan" us on Facebook? We're doing OK having just started a page for PSW the other week. If you use Facebook, please click the above link and become a fan. Every one helps.
