---- Boasts ----

The FC Fredericksburg Gunners got off to a great start to their 3rd season on Saturday by scoring a late penalty kick and defeating the Cary Clarets 3-2 at Fredericksburg Academy. The penalty was the result of a wild sequence of events.

Will Bates (Richmond Strikers, Chester, Va.) will be with the U-18 Men's National Team when it travels to Portugal later this month for games against Finland, Germany and Portugal.

The Hampton Roads Piranhas came from behind in the second half to beat the Charlotte Lady Eagles 2-1 at Charlotte Christian Stadium on May 8, during W-League opening night. The Piranhas will host the Northern Virginia Lady Majestics at Virginia Wesleyan's Foster Field on May 16 in their home opener.

The SOCA Adult League Men's Division 1 concluded play on May 4 and crowned a new champion. Coaches United won the Cup championship in a thrilling 4-3 overtime victory over Lex United. With the Cup Championship in hand, Coaches United claimed a rare "double" as they also finished on top of the League Table several weeks earlier.

Paul VI High School men's soccer captain Chris Moehler has committed to play soccer at the California University of Pennsylvania in California, Pa.

Former FC Virginia players Meghan Lenczyk and Aly Pont will join the Washington Freedom W-League team for the 2009 season. Lenczyk currently plays for the University of Virginia, while Pont minds the nets for Princeton.

Jordan Cyrus (Norfolk Academy), Marquez Fernandez (McDonogh), Given Kalipinde (Episcopal School), Oumar Ballo (Archbishop Curley), Christopher Hegngi (DeMatha), John Stertzer (Flint Hill), Joe Vidmar (McDonogh), San Kernan-Schloss (Sidwell Friends) where all named to ESPNRise.com's All-American list back in late January.

The Baltimore Bays Casa Mia U15s defeated BSC 2-0 on May 7 at Cedar Lane in Harford County to advance to the MSYSA State Cup Championship Match. The Bays Casa Mia U15s will now face the winner of Olney/SAC for the U15 MD Crown.

---- Notes ----

The Northern Virginia Royals opened their 2009 campaign with a 1-1 tie against the home team Reading Rage in the first round of the U.S. Open Cup. A second half goal from Northern Virginia's Joe Barnd drew the match even and ultimately secured the well-earned point for the visiting Royals.

The Northern Virginia Royals stumbled in their second match in less than a day, falling 3-2 in their home opener to the visiting Cary (NC) Clarets. Despite narrowing the margin to a single goal in the final five minutes of the match, the Royals were unable to catch the upstart Clarets.

The Saturday night season opener for the PDL Piranhas slated to host the Virginia Legacy was postponed because of excessive water on Trinder Center/Foster Field at Virginia Wesleyan College. The game was a Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup qualifier for both teams so a make-up must be played by May 25, the final day for PDL teams to qualify. As of this writing, the make-up date had not been announced.
www.hrpiranhas.com.

Several local PDL teams are still in the running to qualify for the Open Cup. Eight qualifying berths are up for grabs: Virginia Legacy, Hampton Roads Piranhas, and Fredericksburg Gunners.

Three local players participated in the U.S. U-14 Boy's National Development Program domestic training camp at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. from May 2-9. Head coach Manny Schellscheidt will gather his team again in June for another eight day domestic training camp at a location to be determined.

First team All-American Tennant McVea and two-year captain Matt Lacey are back to lead the Gunners for another season. Coach Neagu has assembled a mix of top-level D1, D2, and NAIA players.

The Maryland Pride kicks off its season May 16 at Cedar Lane Park against the Atlantic City Diablos. The Pride is a member of the East Conference of the Women's Premier Soccer League, which has 50 teams divided between five conferences.

William and Mary head men's soccer coach Chris Norris announced the addition of four players to the Tribe program. James Lofton (Harrisonburg, Va./Eastern Mennonite) joined the Green and Gold during the spring after transferring from UNC Greensboro and will have three years of eligibility remaining for the College. The Tribe will welcome two incoming freshmen from our area; Chris Perez (Annandale, Va./Gonzaga) and Ben Coffey (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle).

The Graham HS girls (VHSL AA Southwest District) hope to become the first team from southwest Virginia to make a serious dent in the state tournament.

Erin Phillips, now a varsity soccer player, was diagnosed with leukemia at the age of 8 during her soccer season. During 2 years of chemotherapy treatments, she looked up to Mia Hamm and Mia's foundation for inspiration. Erin kicked out the ceremonial first ball to Abby Wambach at the Washington Freedom soccer game on May 3, and finally met her hero Mia Hamm.

Howard Sets Everton Record, FA Cup Final Next: U.S. National Team goalkeeper Tim Howard has set a team record for shut-outs by a goalkeeper for English club Everton FC. The 0-0 draw against Tottenham not only clinched a spot in next year's UEFA Cup for his team, but also gave the New York native 16 clean sheets with two games to go in the Premier League season

Next MLS Team Will Be Philadelphia Union: In homage to the blue collar roots of the first Nations Capital and the central hub of the original thirteen colonies in America, team officials of the next Major League Soccer team announced Monday the team would be called the "Philadelphia Union".
