---- Boasts ----

Potomac Falls High School honored 19 Panthers, including three soccer players, headed for collegiate athletics on Tuesday; Joe Baires to Mary Washington, Hope Fraser to Shepherd, and Erin Proctor to Frostburg State.

Katie Deppen (Virginia Beach, Va.) is one of fourteen newcomers to the University of Vermont 2009 women's soccer team. Deppen was a four-year starter as a defender at Landstown High School and a team co-captain in 2009. She earned team MVP honors as a sophomore and junior and was named all-district three times.

The NPSL's Charm City F.C. opened the Region I qualifying tournament with a resounding 5-0 win over New Jersey's Go Soccer F.C. Charm City have a Baltimore derby awaiting them next, facing Christos S.C. on May 3 at Cedar Lane Park in Md. Kickoff is 3pm, and admission if free.

The U15 Boys Casa Mia Bay 94 (MD) is among the first teams announced by USYS that have punched tickets to the 2009 US Youth Soccer National Championships July 21-26, at Citizens Bank Field in Lancaster, Mass. It will be their first appearance at the National Championships.

All-Met forward Sean Murnane, along with teammates Sharath Rereddy and Irvin Herrera, teamed up to lead Westfield to a 5-0 shutout over Chantilly this week. The victory secured Westfield's standing as the most dangerous offensive team in the Northern Region.

Julia Stejskal, Amalya Clayton, Jessie Gonzalez, and Rachel Mares led West Springfield to an 8-0 triumph over South County on Wednesday. The victory was the seventh straight for No. 6 West Springfield (7-1-1, 5-0 Virginia AAA Patriot District).

After going winless in 2006, 2007, and 2008 the Wakefield Girls Varsity team won their first game in three seasons 3-1 vs. Mount Vernon last Friday night; Veronica Paz had 2 goals, while Laura Razzuri notched one. Led by new coach Badou 'Papa' Dia, the Wakefield Lady Warriors are making great strides in turning around a losing atmosphere.

The U.S. Under-17 Men's National Team opened its 2009 CONCACAF U-17 Championship campaign with a 5-0 win against Cuba on Tuesday evening at Estadio Caliente in Tijuana, Mexico. Forward Jack McInerney scored twice and added two assists while Luis Gil, Stefan Jerome and Sebastian Lletget each tallied once to put the U.S. atop Group A.

---- Notes ----

Real Maryland FC opens its second pro season in the USL Second Division at home Saturday, 6 p.m. against the Bermuda Hogges. Literally everything is different in 2009 from the players, to the coaching staff, to its new home on Richard Montgomery High's artificial turf field.

The Hampton Roads Piranhas, both the W-League and PDL Piranhas, will play their 2009 home games at The Trinder Center/Foster Field at Virginia Wesleyan College. The PDL Piranhas open their 2009 season at home on May 9 at 7 p.m. against the Virginia Legacy.

Loyola Women's Soccer has announced its 2009 schedule and will open its Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference season play on September 25th.

Roanoke Star Soccer Club tracks club players who are at the forefront of area High School soccer as goal scorers, assist makers, top defenders and great goalkeepers. The list of individuals and their contributions since March 30, 2009 is posted at the club website.

The Richmond Kickers Elite VCCL teams played their arch rival the Richmond Strikers last Sunday afternoon, resulting in an overall record of four wins, one tie and two losses.

US Club Soccer has announced that the National Cup VIII application fee surcharge will now be implemented just 30 days prior to each National Cup VIII Regional event. In previous years, the surcharge was implemented in mid-April for all National Cup Regionals.

The updated VYSA Spring 2009 State Cup game schedules for April 25th are posted.

The Maryland 2009 State Cup will see most finalists determined this weekend with quarterfinals set for Saturday and semifinals set for Sunday in most age groups (and good weather forecast).

On Wednesday, April 15, 14 high school-age soccer players from Pakistan visited Robinson Secondary School as part of a cultural exchange program.

MLS Receives $10 Mil For Beckham Extension: Major League Soccer will be receiving $10 million for its agreement to extend David Beckham's loan to AC Milan through the end of the season. "We asked for $10 million, we got our $10 million," MLS commissioner Don Garber said Wednesday during a meeting with the Associated Press Sports Editors.

Rookie Life Webisodes Must See Video: Are you, or do know a young player who aspires to be a professional? Episode six of this great series tracking several MLS rookies, really drives home the point of how important it is to train every day like your livelihood depends on it, and how sharp the focus is on the little details - like a single bad pass in preseason game. For those that watch this series and think "that's not fair", or "its not really that hard", you don't get it, and have some growing up to do if you really have any any shot at being a pro. For those that watch and get an adrenalin rush dreaming of being in those players' shoes, keep working hard - you're on the right track.

Talk Of D.C. United Moving Is Real: Ives Galarcep chimes in with a wake up call for all fans of soccer - not just in the D.C. region, and I agree. The talk about the potential of D.C. United having to leave the region altogether is clearly much more than posturing to get politicians on the teams' side. It is a business reality that the team cannot keep playing at RFK much longer. They lose MILLIONS of dollars per year. How long would you like to lose money at something that could be fixed by accepting countless offers from other cities to "come to our city, we'll help you build a stadium"?

WAGS Parent Ban and Travel Soccer Hot Topic On WashingtonPost.com: While the blog post in the Parenting section of the Washington Post is not necessarily well researched (confuses clubs like Arlington Travel, Olney, and DC Stoddert as their own separate travel leagues, as opposed to clubs that enter teams into travel leagues), the goldmine of opinion and perspective on this topic is in the reader comments.
