---- Boasts ----
Doug McBride, Virginia Legacy 2008, is on the list of 90 participants for the third annual USL Men's Player Showcase this weekend.
Virginia freshmen Tony Tchani and Brian Ownby (Glen Allen, Va.) earned National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-South Atlantic Region honors. Tchani was a first team selection, while Ownby was a second team honoree.
Georgetown's Len Coleman was named to the All-Northeast Region Third Team by the NSCAA. Coleman is a center back in a defense that allowed just 16 goals all year and posted 10 shutouts including five-consecutive clean sheets to start the season.
American University redshirt junior Cooper Bryant was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/adidas All-Mid-Atlantic Third Team.
George Washington junior Andy Stadler was named to the NSCAA Middle Atlantic Region First Team. Stadler's 31 points this season were the eight-most in a single season in the GW program's 44-year history and earned him first team All-Atlantic 10 accolades.
Liberty's Joshua Boateng, Mike Gelatt and Juan Guzman have been selected to the NSCAA Division I Men's Soccer All-South Atlantic Region teams.
Salisbury junior midfielder Kyle Sterling was named to the first team and sophomore midfielder Mike Napolitano was named to the third team of the 2008 NCAA Division III Men's All-South Region Team.
Old Dominion senior forward Katie Watson (Woodbridge, Va./Potomac) was named to the First Team All-Mid-Atlantic Region, by the NSCAA and adidas. She led ODU in every offensive category and scored a career-high tying 33 points this season.
Navy's Shelly Moeller, the 2008 Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year, was named to the NSCAA's All-Mid-Atlantic Region Second Team, marking the sixth consecutive year in which a Midshipman has earned all-region mention.
Loyola senior back Sarra Moller has earned All-Mid Atlantic Regional All-America honors from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
Libby Held, a Junior from Potomac, Md. and Ashley Hoath, a Junior from Alexandria, Va. were both named to NSCAA/adidas Division III Women's All-America Teams
The Richmond Kickers Academy teams' Winter Showcase trip ended on a high note with the U16 team defeating Real Colorado 2-0 on a pair of goals by Matthew Epperly and Jacob Doyle to go 2-0-1 on the weekend.
Ryan Zinkham, FC Fredericksburg, and Adrain Acosta, Northern Virginia Royals, have been named to the USL's U15 Boys All-Tournament Team following the 10th Annual North American Finals in Tampa, Fl. Zinkham was the top vote-getter recognized by opposing coaches as one of Fredericksburg's top two players in every match he played.
The Kickers U12 Girls Destiny made it to the finals and the Charge won their championship match at the Atlantic Cup last weekend at the Hampton Roads Soccer Complex in Virginia Beach.
The Baltimore Sun has published a Special Section naming its players and coaches of the year, first and second teams for every sport, final standings and photos from the 2008 season.
---- Notes ----
United Soccer Leagues has released the alignment, schedule structure and playoff details for the 2009 USL Premier Development League. The Fredericksburg Gunners, Hampton Roads Piranhas, Northern Virginia Royals, and the Virginia Legacy are among the teams competing in the Mid Atlantic Division.
Maryland U15 boys ODP player Malcolm Harris (Casa Mia Bays/Good Counsel HS) spent his Thanksgiving week training and playing games with the youth professional academy at Glasgow Celtic, one of Europe's highest profile clubs.
---- Editor ----
Could Ben Olsen Retire: Steven Goff reports in his blog about Ben Olsen. "Everyone in the D.C. United community wants to see veteran midfielder Ben Olsen back to his old self and in the lineup next season. The reality is, however, that he has a long way to go in his comeback from recurring ankle problems. Retirement, sadly, is a distinct possibility."
Colleges Still An Important Pipeline: Doug McIntyre of ESPN filed this piece on the eve of the NCAA Men's College Cup. It discusses the role college soccer must still play in developing professional players, and how it is doing just that.
Freedom More Than Just A Pro Team: While much of the Washington Freedom's focus has been on building a professional team to be part of Women's Professional Soccer's inaugural season, it can be easy to overlook the fact that the Freedom is more than just a professional soccer team. With youth teams, affiliations with local clubs and a top-level amateur squad, the Freedom hopes that building a club system similar to the ones in Europe will be the key to supporting professional women's soccer in the U.S.
OMG! Three Must See Videos: There are three soccer videos you must see, and I am sure you'll forward to your players and teammates. First is a flashback video from 2-years ago featuring a juggling trick-off between newly crowned NCAA Champion teammates Casey Nogueira and Tobin Heath. Next is sticking with Heath as she does her own "walkabout" all over town, juggling the whole time. Finally, and get ready to laugh OUT LOUD, don't try this defense of a flip throw at your home field kids! |
