---- Boasts ----

Soccer America's weekly Men's and Women's Top 25 list includes Maryland (14-3-0) in fourth and Loyola (16-0-1) in sixth on the men's list; Virginia (12-4-2) on the women's list at number 14.

The Bethesda Fire (boys) and the Bethesda Freedom (girls) are the 2009 U-13 Maryland State Cup Champions and have earned a spot in the 2009 Region 1 Championships in West Virginia. Both teams won their state cup final matches with scores of 2 to 1 against the Olney Rangers (boys) and Greater Severna Park Kickers (girls) respectively.

In boys MIAA soccer, Greg McBride scored in the 2nd minute to give Gilman's No. 5 soccer team a lead they never relinquished as they beat visiting John Carroll, 2-0, in the quarterfinals of the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference tournament. The Greyhounds meet No. 7 Mount St. Joseph in the semifinals today at 3:15 p.m.

Archbishop Spalding girls' soccer won the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference championship game 2-0 against No.1 McDonogh on Sunday. It is the program's second crown in three years.

Friends girls soccer won over St. Paul's 2-1 in overtime to capture the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland B Conference championship.

Citizens' Association, affiliated with the citywide DC Federation of Civic Associations, awarded one of its "Grassroots Honor Awards" to DC Stoddert League's Director of Coaching, Len Oliver, at the Federation's 78th Annual Awards Celebration on Saturday, October 25.

---- Notes ----

Bakary Soumare, a native of Mali who moved to New York as a teenager and starred one year for the University of Virginia has not only been nominated for MLS Defender of the Year in his second professional year with the Chicago Fire, he has just chosen to play his national team soccer for Mali rather than wait two years for his U.S. citizenship applications to process.

Jozy Altidore scored his first career goal in Spain's La Liga just seconds after entering as a late substitute, knocking in the 4th goal in Villarreal's 4-1 drubbing of Athletic Bilbao.

If you're 21 years old or older, you're invited to join the Screaming Eagles at a non-denominational off-season D.C. United Supporter happy hour on Thursday at Duffy's Irish Pub (2106 Vermont Ave., NW; across the street from the 9:30 Club, and a block from the east entrance to the U St./Cardozo Metro station). The fun starts at 4PM.

The Baltimore Blast invites fans of all ages to join players for dinner, fun and games on Wednesday, November 12th, 7 p.m. at Baltimore's ESPN Zone at The Inner Harbor, 601 East Pratt Street, Baltimore, MD. Please RSVP by Wednesday.

The MPSSAA region semi-final round was completed this weekend and the pairings have been determined for today's region championship games.  All 16 region champions will be aiming to have the honor of playing in the state semifinals on Friday or Saturday.  Boys Bracket - Girls Bracket

The Baltimore Sun has published a summary of Maryland IAAC boys' and girls' regional contests as the various high school teams progress toward the semifinals and finals this week.

Valley AFC's winter indoor/futsal program for U12 and up is open for registration. Deadline is November 14.

Mark your calendars. The VYSA Workshop and Awards Luncheon is set for January 23 and 24, 2009 at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City in Arlington, Virginia. Registration will be open soon.

GO VOTE: 'nuff said.

Hidden Gem of Soccer Videos: I have no idea how long this feature has been on the MLS web site, but how cool it is. The video packages from each game are organized by types of plays, by players, by goals, and many other categories. As a teaching tool, it is clearly a needle in the haystack of millions of generic videos of soccer on youtube by amateurs.

OMG! What a Goal: This week's installment of 'OMG! What a Goal' not only features a sublime cruyff-like flick to the far post, but a goal that came in first ever playoff game for Real Salt Lake, in the first ever playoff game in their gorgeous new stadium, it also came in the 90th minute to take a 1-0 lead in the 2-game, total-goals series with Chivas USA. In other words - BIG TIME GOAL no matter how it went in, but the technical genius just made it all the more special.

John Haydon - Soehn Deserves to Stay: Washington Times soccer man John Haydon says D.C. United Head Coach Tom Soehn should get another shot considering the tremendous adversity he nearly overcame.

Crystal Palace Off-Season Update: Crystal Palace has compiled a nice summary of their off-season activities and the status of several players who've been on loan all around the world, and right here at home.
