An additional defendant has been named in the wrongful-death lawsuit filed by the parents of a Frederick County boy who died last year when a soccer goal toppled onto him. Mary and Greg Ellias filed the $10 million suit in March in Prince William County Circuit Court.

UMBC Freshman midfielder Andrew Bulls (Millersville, Md./McDonogh) has been named America East Conference Rookie of the Week for games ending Aug. 31, 2008.

The United States Men's National team rose three spots in the most recent FIFA World Rankings to number 28. Mexico was the biggest mover, moving eight places and leap-frogging the U.S. to land at number 24.

D.C. United forward Jaime Moreno has been called up to join the Bolivian National Team to play a World Cup qualifier versus Ecuador on September 6 and against Brazil on September 10.  

Profiles of USL W-League players who are aiming to break into the professional ranks with WPS in 2009 have been posted. Athletes associated with teams from our area include Fredericksburg Lady Gunners: Nicola Davies and Anne Houliston; Richmond Kickers Destiny: Emma Delves and Brittain Maas (former); Northern Virginia Majestics: Amanda Detterline, Kelly Hammond, and Tara Kidwell; Washington Freedom: Kelly Golebiowski, Christen Karniski, Ali Andrzejewski, Anabel Jimenez, Heather Tomko, and Andrea Hay (former); Hampton Roads Piranhas: Kim Francis, Kim McMullen, and Mercy Akide-Udoh.

Richmond Kickers Youth Soccer Club named Mark Murphy as Goalkeeping Director. Murphy boasts a 4-0-0 record in a backup role for the Kickers professional team and was a four-year star at Mount St. Mary's, playing 54 game and posting a 1.36 goals against average.

D.C. United's CONCACAF Champions League opponents have been set after the prelimiary matches were completed this week. The Black-and-Red will play in Group A, hosting Deportivo Saprissa (Costa Rica) on Tuesday, September 16 at 8:00 p.m., Cruz Azul (Mexico) on Wednesday, October 1 at 8:00 p.m., and Marathon (Honduras) on Wednesday, October 29 at 8:00 p.m.

The George Mason men kick off their home season tonight against in-state rivals Virginia. GMU supporters are trying to break the all time single-game attendance record of 4,500 set in 1982, also against UVA. The match kicks off at 8 pm at George Mason Stadium. Supporters of GMU are asked to wear green.

Virginia Tech soccer hosts the Hawthorn Suites Hokies Invitational today and Sunday in Blacksburg. Catch live, play-by-play audio feed of the two Tech matches at the Hokies website.

The nomination form for the 2009 Jerry Yeagley Award for Exceptional Personal Achievement is now available at the NSCAA site.

The VYSA Fall 2008-09 State Cup season draw was held Wednesday and brackets are posted.

The Baltimore Sun has published a Players-To-Watch list for boys' soccer in Maryland
and the results of a poll ranking high schools for the boys soccer season.

The McDonogh Invitational pairings are set. The two-day event featuring eight teams will take place today and tomorrow at McDonogh School outside of Baltimore.
