Loyola College, the defending MAAC Champion, has been picked to win the 2008 MAAC men's soccer title in a preseason poll voted on by the league's 10 head coaches.

Four women soccer athletes from our area are on the 2008 Women's Hermann Trophy Watch List just released: Zoe Bouchelle (Cockeysville, Md.) at Penn State, Kim Germain (McLean, Va.) and Cate Tisinger (Clifton, Va.) at James Madison, and  Claire Zimmeck (Fairfax, Va.) at William and Mary.

Claire Zimmeck of William and Mary has been named CAA Preseason Player of the Year for the second time, in addition to being named to the 2008 Women's Hermann Trophy Watch List.

Kaitlin O'Connor (Chantilly, Va.), sophomore defender, has been named to the William and Mary all-conference pre-season team. She scored three goals and had two assists in her rookie campaign last year, including the match-winner against UNC Wilmington.

The United States Naval Academy was chosen to win the 2008 Patriot League Women's Soccer Championship in a vote by head coaches and sports information directors. American University came in 4th and Army sits at number 6 in the pre-season poll.

The FC Fredericksburg Lady Gunners U-16's clinched a berth to the 2008 North American Super-Y Finals in Tampa with a 1-0 away victory over the Atlanta Silverbacks last weekend.

---- Notes ----

D.C. United and its charitable arm, United for D.C., will host the 3rd annual United for D.C. celebration at tomorrow's home game against the Colorado Rapids. A portion of all the proceeds will be donated to United for D.C. to support their signature programs: Kicks for Kids, United Reads and United Soccer Club.

The 2008 Men's Hermann Trophy Watch List has been released. Although there are players on the list from schools in our area, there are no individual players with a hometown in Virginia or Maryland this year.

Fox Soccer Channel will televise women's collegiate soccer as part of its 2008 NSCAA College Game of the Week telecasts. The TV schedule includes James Madison v Penn State (Sept. 16) and William and Mary v Virginia Commonwealth (Oct. 16).

The Virginia women's soccer team officially begins its 2008 season Friday night as it hosts Loyola at Klöckner Stadium at 7 p.m. The game is the season opener for both teams and is a rematch of a 2007 NCAA Tournament first round game, won by the Cavaliers 4-1.

WAGS Schedules for Fall 2008 have been posted.

The Thunder Soccer Fest T-shirt order deadline is today, Friday, August 22nd.

The Dulles National Soccer Tournament plays this weekend in Northern Virginia. Good luck to all the teams.

Youth Soccer Month kicks off in September. The national celebration is action packed with contests, tour, events and more.

Olympic Final: Is tonight the night Argentina repeats as Olympic Champion and puts a stop to the impressive Nigerian run at another Olympic Gold Medal? The game is on live at midnight, so you'll have to watch to find out. How much more frustrating is it that Nigeria has gone so far knowing the US nearly got a result against them with only 10-men for 87 minutes? Argentina looks really good though, so I do think it will be a silver for Nigerians this time around. Kudos to NBC for setting up the all-soccer channel this time around. It was nice to watch any game I wanted, and in high-def to boot.

DC Jam Session Tomorrow at RFK: Are you 21 or older? Then plan on heading out to tomorrow's D.C. United game in Lot 8 at 2 PM for the DC Jam Session. All the music, food, and drink you can handle for five hours, then enjoy the United match. If you're not planning on attending this, you might want to avoid lot 8 tomorrow.
