The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is down to 16 teams, eight of which are MLS teams just joining the official knock out fray in round three of the 95 year old tourament. The Richmond Kickers are in Boston to face defending Cup champions New England Revolution, while the New York Red Bulls are in Annapolis to face 2nd year pro club Crystal Palace, and D.C. United host Rochester Rhinos at the Maryland SoccerPlex.

As of our press deadline, two area teams had completed their Region I Final match, with opposite results. In U18 boys action, McLean MPS FC won 3-2 over Montgomery United of Eastern PA, while U14 girls Chantilly Burn dropped a 2-1 decision to Stars of Massachusetts. D.C. United announced Monday the club has acquired midfielder Craig Thompson from the Houston Dynamo in exchange for a fourth round natural selection in the 2010 supplemental draft. He will be available for tonight's US Open Cup match vs the Rochester Rhinos at Maryland SoccerPlex.

United delivered big time with a 4-1 whooping of the 1st place LA Galaxy Sunday in the first game of a nationally televised double header on ABC. The second game of the day was the European Championships, which ended 1-0 for Spain, and was decidely less exciting in many ways to the end-to-end action and drama at RFK.

Liverpool Forward Fernando Torres was the hero for Spain by firing them to Euro 2008 glory against Germany in Vienna, ending 44 years of under-achievement. The quadrennial competition to determine the best team in Europe is considered the biggest tournament in the world other than a World Cup.

Crystal Palace Baltimore have one hand gripped firmly on the DeOrsey Maryland Cup thanks to Sergio Flores' 57th minute strike that clinched a 2-1 win over Real Maryland.  Cecil Lewis opened up proceedings for Baltimore in the 34th minute, only to see Nilson Perez draw the Monarchs level two minutes later.

In a match for bragging rights between two teams that had already qualified for the U20 World Cup, the U.S. Under-20 Women's National Team fell to Canada, 1-0, in the CONCACAF Championship Final at Estadio Cuauhtemoc in Puebla, Mexico.

Warren Williams, All-Met Coach of the Year, is leaving Centreville after nine seasons to coach for W.T.Woodson.
 
The Northern Virginia Royals rallied from two goals down to tie the New Jersey Rangers 2-2 at Morris Catholic High School (NJ) on Sunday afternoon.

The Hampton Roads Piranhas lost 3-1 to the Ironbound Express.

The Northern Virginia Royals were topped by the Reading Rage 2-0 on Saturday night.

The Hampton Roads Piranhas women avoided a shut out by the Carolina Railhawks on Saturday night with a goal in the 81st minute.  Final score was 4-1.

Despite registering 21 shots, the Northern Virginia Majestics failed to find the net and finished even with the Fredericksburg Lady Gunners in a scoreless draw on Friday night at Washington Lee High School. They face local rival Washington Freedom on July 2nd at 4:00 PM at Wakefield High School in Arlington, Virginia.

DC Stoddert Soccer, in partnership with DC Parks and Recreation, is renovating Ft Stevens Field with cold-resistant Patriot Bermuda Grass. The field is scheduled to be ready for play by opening day this September.

Ethiopian Soccer Central: Twenty thousand soccer fans are expected in the Washington area this week to watch teams of Ethiopians from the United States and Canada compete. The annual tournament has become one of the largest gatherings of Ethiopians outside their homeland. RFK Stadium is the venue, and hotel rooms throughout the region, including 600 at Prince George's National Harbor, have been booked.
