> Onyewu continues impressive 2008 with Belgian Championship
Olney Maryland's Oguchi Onyewu has won the Belgian League championship with Standard Liege. It was the first time Liege has won the championship in 25 years. Onyewu, who played for FC Potomac as a youth, has had an outstanding 2008 so far. Besides anchoring the defense for Liege, he has scored goals in his last two US Men's games against serious opponents in Mexico and Poland. He wasn't even "supposed" to be at Liege this season either, but after being loaned out to Newcastle United of the English Premier League last spring, he was not offered a contract, and returned to finish out his commitment in Belgium.

> Kickers open season with win over Western Mass
The Richmond Kickers picked up a 3-0 win over the Western Mass Pioneers to open the 2008 regular season in front of a crowd of 3,197 fans.  A slow first half led to a flurry of goals late in the game when defender Anthony Catalano headed home the first tally of the night.  Captain Mike Burke flicked in the second, just two minutes later, each goal assisted by newcomer Ben Hunter.  Later, in the 88th minute, a foul inside the box resulted in a penalty kick, which David Bulow converted, to close out the night.  The Kickers take to the road for the next three matches, returning Saturday, May 24th to host the Charlotte Eagles at 7pm at the University of Richmond Stadium.

> Women's roster named for three domestic friendlies
After a successful run at the 2008 CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying tournament, U.S. Women's National Team head coach Pia Sundhage will bring 25 players on a three-week, three-city, three-game road trip for the USA's first domestic matches of the year. All 25 players will travel and train in the three cities, but Sundhage will suit up only 18 players for each match. The U.S. will finish their tour on May 10 against Canada at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C. Angela Hucles continues her recent string of being the only local woman on a U.S. roster in recent camps, though Abby Wambach has significant ties to our area after playing with WUSA's Washington Freedom for three years. Ali Kreiger has not returned to the U.S. roster since participating in China's Four Nations tournament in January.

> Real Maryland drop franchise opener to Western Mass 1-0
Despite severe rain all day in Boyds, Maryland, the long awaited season opener for Real Maryland took place on Sunday in the main stadium at the Maryland SoccerPlex. A 33rd minute strike by Neil Krause was all Western Mass needed, despite an otherwise evenly contested match that saw the teams close in every statistical category. El Salvador national team stars Denis Alas and Ronald Cerritos both started, with Alas going 90 minutes with 3 shots and Cerritos 77 minutes and no shots. Barbadian international and Lanham, MD local, Daryl Ferguson, went 90 minutes in defense for the Monarchs, while Teodoro Ramierz was ejected for a 2nd caution in the 66th. Real Maryland will be back in action next Saturday night versus the Pittsburg Riverhounds at 7:30 at the Maryland SoccerPlex.

> USA fails to qualify for FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup 2008
El Salvador and the hosts, Mexico, qualified to the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup 2008 after eliminating Costa Rica and USA, respectively, at the CONCACAF Beach Soccer Championship held at the Unidad Deportiva Municipal AgustĂn Flores Contreras in Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco on Saturday. Goals by Gustavo Rosales and Ricardo Villalobos helped Mexico defeat the two-time CONCACAF Champion, USA, by a score of 2:1 and capture the Confederation's Title. The victory also progressed the Tricolores to their second consecutive FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup. El Salvador and Mexico will join 14 other countries at the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup 2008 that will take place in Marseille, France from 17-27 July.

The way soccer development should be: The Associated Press has weighed in on the new US Soccer Federation Player Development Academy system, and how the idea - if not yet the reality - is on the right path. My favorite part of the article is a quote by John Hackworth that all good coaches have been saying forever, but is rarely heeded by soccer parents on their first trip through the travel soccer kaleidoscope. "American players tend to develop bad habits playing for club teams that often emphasize winning over developing skills and games -- even against weak opponents -- over practice. It's not a matter of whether little Johnny can handle a soccer ball, it's a matter of whether little Johnny can get a result. That is a problem, and it's always been a problem for national team coaches like myself."

USA v Brazil rematch for the gold: The recent Women's Olympic Draw has set up what could be the biggest chance for revenge in the history of the US Women's program. After their embarrassing 4-0 drubbing by "Marta's Army" in the Women's World Cup last summer, the teams are on a collision course for a Gold Medal final match if both advance as planned.

Three brothers Carroll: Brian, Jeff, and Pat all went to West Springfield High School, played Division I college soccer and now play in MLS. Brian left D.C. United last year, but younger brothers Jeff and Pat (the rookie) are still with United, though neither played when Brian's new team came to town last Thursday.

Matt Eby is one of few deaf pros: Steven Goff of the Washington post profiled Real Maryland's Matt Eby, who is legally deaf from birth, is believed to be the only deaf professional athlete in the USA, and possibly one of only a handful in the world.
