> U.S. Women's soccer team qualifies for Beijing OlympicsThe U.S. Women's National Team rebounded from a frustrating first half to score three second half goals - two by Natasha Kai - and clinch a spot in the 2008 Beijing Olympics with a 3-0 victory over Costa Rica in the semifinal of 2008 CONCACAF Olympic Women's Qualifying. With qualification accomplished, the U.S. will play Canada tomorrow in the championship game of the 2008 CONCACAF Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournament with only pride on the line. The U.S. also defeated Costa Rica in the semifinal of the Olympic qualifying tournament four years ago to earn a berth to Athens 2004, winning 4-0 in that match in San Jose, Costa Rica. [more +]
> D.C. United unlucky not to advance despite defeating Pachuca D.C. United's second-leg CONCACAF Champions' Cup semifinal against Pachuca of the Mexican league last night at RFK was full of action by the players involved, but will be noted for the inaction of the referee by United faithful and staff. United needed to win the game by at least two goals just to tie the series and force over time against their southern rivals, and they had plenty of chances. Despite controlling the game, United found itself far into the 2nd half when Fred was pulled down in the box for a clear penalty that was not called by the referee. Not long after, Pachuca scored on a counter attack with 14 minutes remaining. Then United's luck changed as they quickly put two goals past a stunned Pachuca team hanging on for dear life, before cruelly running out of time as the referee ended the game before all stoppage time had expired. > Baltimore Blast win first playoff game against New Jersey Baltimore Blast won their opening quarterfinal playoff game convincingly against the New Jersey Ironmen last night at 1st Mariner Arena. The final score of 22-10 left no doubt, though at one point in the 2nd quarter the game was tied 6-6. Machel Millwood picked up where he left off in the regular season, leading the Blast with eight points on the night (three goals and two assists). The second of the "best of three" game MISL playoff series moves to the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ Saturday night. If the Blast win that game, they'll advance to the semifinal round, where they'll face the Milwaukee Wave on Wednesday in Baltimore.

> US Men's Soccer team jumps seven spots in World Rankings The United States Men's Soccer team jumped seven spots in the latest FIFA World Rankings to number 21 overall. The jump in total points was attributed mostly to the team's recent 3-0 defeat of Poland in late March. The ranking system uses a four-year rolling total of points accumulated for wins and draws, with different weightings applied based on the competition and time passed since each match was played, among other minor aspects. The ranking is one of the highest for the US since just before the 2006 World Cup, where the Americans were ranked an amazing 4th overall. However, FIFA changed their ranking formula rather drastically after the last World Cup, which - combined with the team's poor performance in the World Cup - caused the US team to slide all the way down to 31st. Kidwell, from Leesburg, VA, comes with 24 career goals and the achievement of being second on University of Alabama at Birmingham's all-time goal-scoring list in 2004. Kidwell and Watson both join the Majestics after playing the 2007 season for the Washington Freedom. [more +]
