> U.S. Women's soccer wins group stage in Olympic qualifying
The U.S. Women's National Team got two goals from Natasha Kai and one from Abby Wambach in a rousing 3-1 victory over Mexico in front of a sold-out crowd of 22,280 at the Estadio Olimpico Benito Juarez. The victory gave the USA first place in Group A at the 2008 CONCACAF Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournament and a semifinal match against Group B runner-up Costa Rica, with the winner receiving one of two Olympic berths. In 2004, the USA also defeated Costa Rica for a berth to the Olympics, winning 4-0 in the semifinal of the Olympic qualifying competition in San Jose, Costa Rica.

> D.C. United cruise past Toronto 4-1 in RFK opener
D.C. United opened their 2008 MLS season at RFK in front of over 20,000 spirited fans, including one of the largest gatherings of Screaming Eagles and Barra Brava supporters in recent memory. They were not to be disappointed, as the Black and Red took barely a minute to break their 2-game scoreless slump with a close range goal by 2007 MLS MVP Luciano Emilio. The game was nearly over three minutes later with the 2nd coming of Santino Quaranta slotted home to make it 2-0 with 85 minutes left to play. Then Toronto completely sealed their fate in the 22nd minute with a straight red card ejection to Kevin Harmse. More goals would come, while the only consolation for the 2nd year Canadian side was an impressive 88th minute goal by University of Maryland alum Maurice Edu.

> U.S. Women humble Jamaica in Olympic opener
The U.S. Women's National Team got two goals from Abby Wambach, who also created two others, in a 6-0 victory over Jamaica in the USA's first match of the 2008 CONCACAF Women's Olympic Qualifying. With the win, combined with Mexico's 8-1 win over Jamaica on Wednesday, the USA and Mexico have qualified for the semifinals while Jamaica was eliminated.

> Real Maryland tops Crystal Palace Baltimore in pre-season test
Real Maryland passed its first ever USL-2 test with a 1-0 pre-season win over Crystal Palace Baltimore at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, Maryland on Saturday evening. It was an emotional night as both teams lined up before the match to honor Matt DeOrsey- a local player and teammate of Crystal Palace Baltimore Co-coach Pete Medd- who died tragically a few months ago just before his 30th birthday. Real Maryland captain, Ronald Cerritos, then presented the DeOrsey family with a Real Maryland pennant and a moment of silence was held in Matt DeOrsey's honor. A 35th minute goal by Nilson Perez was all the upstart USL-2 side needed, despite a late game surge by Palace requiring several strong saves by Emilo Zelaya, to preserve the Monarchs' first ever win against a USL opponent. Real Maryland kicks off its inaugural season with a 4:00 p.m. home match on April 20th, 2008 against the Western Mass Pioneers.

> US Women's National Team to play at RFK in May
Steven Goff is reporting in the Washington Post that the US Women's National Team will play a pre-Olympic friendly against our northern neighbors Canada on May 10th. The match will be the first by the world's number one ranked Women's team at RFK since the 2003 World Cup, which was before the stadium sharing arrangement with baseball's Washington Nationals made the facility undesirable for international matches, and also left very few open dates. The U.S. women seek to wrap up their Olympic Qualifying process Wednesday against Costa Rica at 1 PM Eastern.

Emily Margaret Burke, 15, of Sykesville died Saturday in an auto accident when a car driven by her older brother Paul struck a tree in Carroll County. Emily Burke was an honor student at Liberty High School where she played soccer and varsity softball.

---- Boasts ----

American Oguchi Onyewu had a memorable day on April 6, notching the game-winner against Mouscron in the 86th minute to keep Standard Liège atop Jupiler League standings with five games to go. It was the defender's second goal of the season, the other scored in the first game of the season.

Six players from our region are among seven newcomers to the Virginia Tech 2008 Hokie squad announced by women's soccer head coach Kelly Cagle last week.

D.C. United's U-18 and U-16 Academy teams had a similar weekend, with one win and one loss apiece.  Both teams have a 4-2-2 record on the season and will face FC Delco and PA Classics at home at Maryland Soccerplex on April 12-13.

Jamestown's boys soccer team, the Eagles, won their fifth straight game of the season against Poquoson last Wednesday night with a 5-0 finish. Since a 4-1 season opening loss to Beach District powerhouse Kellam, the Eagles have outscored their opposition 29-1.

The Blacksburg boys' soccer team defeated Osbourn 4-0 Saturday afternoon to win the High Peak Sportswear Soccer Classic played in Lynchburg.

MLS Goalfest: For everyone sitting on the soccer-fan fence complaining about the need for more goals, have you been watching MLS these past two weeks? Try 43 goals scored in 13 games, for an average of 3.31 goals per game. Keeping up with that pace is unlikely, but no doubt this year's teams have come out firing, and thriving in home-crowd support. No home team has lost a game in the first two weeks of play either! Does this prove that for more goals, bring more fans, whose support helps home teams score more goals? Time will tell, but I hope so!

Women's Olympic Future: The most important Women's soccer match since last year's Olympics is about to take place, but  you won't be able to see a minute of it without a plane ticket to Mexico. The world's top ranked ladies will face Costa Rica tomorrow at 1 PM Eastern time to determine their Olympic qualification. A win and they're in. A loss, and heads will roll. The only place you can keep up real-time will be reading the in-game commentary on USSoccer.com's Match Tracker. You can also keep up with the world's best women's soccer team on their blog.

Donovan Critics Explained: Landon Donovan is the man a lot of US soccer fanatics love to hate (unless he's scoring for the US in a World Cup of course). It's a phenomenon that has really bubbled up over the past few years, with most all referring to the leading scorer in US Soccer history (at only 25 years old) as "Landycakes." ESPN's Steve Davis isn't the first journalist to examine this issue, but his recent piece I think best describes my personal take on the situation. If you have any negative feeling for probably the best US player of all time, you should read this and think twice before you "blame" Donovan for your own frustrations at US Soccer's place in the world.
