U.S. Women's National Team head coach Pia Sundhage has chosen the 20-player roster to travel to Ciudad Juarez , Mexico, for 2008 CONCACAF Women's Olympic Qualifying as the USA attempts to earn one of two berths to the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The U.S. is in Group A and will open the tournament on April 4 vs. Jamaica before facing Mexico on April 6. The top two teams from Group A will advance to the semifinals, with those winners qualifying for the 2008 Women's Olympic Football Tournament in Beijing.

D.C. United opened their 13th Major League Soccer season the same as their 12th, with an away loss to a mediocre team playing in a new stadium. Perhaps going on to win the Supporters Shield anyway last year gave United confidence they could afford to ease into their MLS schedule with more important things on their mind. And it is hard to blame them with a major intercontinental match just three days away against Mexican league power Pachuca. If they come home from Mexico only needing a draw at RFK next week to advance to the Champions' Cup Final, Saturday's 2-0 MLS loss to Kansas City should fade quickly from memory, and may even be seen as helpful in preparing the team for some adversity early in their long 2008 campaign. The third-place Baltimore Blast (18-10) defeated the visiting Chicago Storm, 16-8, Saturday night at 1st Mariner Arena. In his return from an ankle injury, Giuliano Celenza recorded two goals to lead his team to victory. The Blast will play their final regular season game this Saturday at 1st Mariner Arena. Regardless of the result the local professional indoor team has secured a playoff spot, and will begin their championship quest shortly. D.C. United announced Friday the signing of goalkeeper James Thorpe and midfielder Dane Murphy to developmental contracts, and the waiving of Guy-Roland Kpene. D.C. United originally selected Thorpe in the fourth round (38th overall) of the MLS Supplemental Draft on January 24, 2008. Murphy signed with United having gone undrafted after a four-year career at the University of Virginia. Forward Guy-Roland Kpene leaves D.C. Richmond Kickers girls and boys teams have been finding success in pre-season tournaments.
Congratulations to FC Virginia Courage 94 for winning the Premier group of the U13 girls in the inaugural FPYC Liberty Cup Invitational over the weekend.
The City of Lynchburg Virginia has been selected as one of just 16 cities throughout the country to host a Regional Challenge Tournament during the prestigious 2008 National Goalie War Championship Tournament Tour. A Goalie War is an intense battle of shots and saves. Lynchburg United Soccer will play host to the Mid Atlantic Regional Goalie War Challenge on Saturday and Sunday, June 7-8, 2008 at the Lynchburg Regional Soccer Complex.

ODSL teams up with VYSA to offer 6v6 league option for high school age boys. Under the pilot program, any age eligible player from the same club can be named on game day rosters - which will be limited to 12 players. Matches will be played on current U9 to U12 small sided fields and a number of special rules will apply including penalty kick tie breakers, substitution on the fly, and no offside rule. High School Headers: Heading has got to be one of the most underdeveloped skills in youth soccer. Watch any game at any youth age, and you're sure to see at least some players shy away from an obvious attempt to put head to ball. The teams that do this best simply score more goals - period. My Perfect Record: For anyone following my first year as a high school coach, just wanted to keep you up to speed that I have a perfect record of 1-0-0 with no goals against. Our Potomac Falls JV girls defeated Heritage 1-0 in our season opener. Weather permitting, that perfect record will be put to a serious test tonight at Loudoun County.
