> Nowak calls twenty four to men's Olympic qualifying camp Freddy Adu, Jozy Altidore, and Benny Feilhaber headline the Olympic qualifying roster for the U.S. Under-23 Men's National Team. The camp will take place in Bradenton, Fla., from March 1-9, before the final 20-player roster travels to Tampa, the location of the first-round games in the qualifying tournament for Group A. The final 20-player roster may include players not in the Bradenton training camp, and will be announced prior to the team's arrival in Tampa on March 9. The qualifying tournament is the only chance for the U.S. team to make it to the 2008 Olympics, something the Americans failed to do in 2004 after losing to Mexico in the semifinals. Only the tournament's two finalists will advance to China this summer. [more +]
> MLS makes Philadelphia home of sixteenth team Though rumored for weeks as a "done deal", Major League Soccer officially announced the city of Chester will be the league's 16th team. They will begin play in 2010 in a brand new stadium, and already have a 1,600-member fan club driving season ticket sales a full 2-years before an opening kick. The team completes a major round of expansion for MLS, and will become the sixth new team added to the league since 2005. MLS has said it plans to cap teams in the league at 18, but has not said when the next two will be named. For D.C. area fans, the addition of a team to the Philadelphia market creates an instant rivalry, and the real possibility of sizable contingents of "away fans" attending games in each other's stadium - a first for MLS. > Maryland Stadium Authority hires consultant for D.C. United stadium study The Maryland Stadium Authority ordered a $70,000 study Wednesday to determine whether Prince George's County would be a suitable home for the D.C. United soccer club. The study by Crossroads Consulting will examine the county's potential as a soccer market and the potential tax and economic development benefits of attracting the Major League Soccer team. It will not focus on specific stadium sites. Those would have to be vetted later, though the club has shown interest over the years in several locations near College Park. [more +]
> Richmond Kickers secure veteran Kevin Knight for another season The Richmond Kickers are pleased to announce veteran defender Kevin Knight has agreed to anchor the central midfield for one more season, pending USSF approval. Specific terms of the contract were not disclosed. A stalwart on the Kickers defensive unit for eight seasons, Knight appeared in seven games during the 2007 campaign, holding the opposition at just four goals allowed while on the field. Prior to his stint with the Kickers, the NY/NJ MetroStars (now New York Red Bulls) chose Knight 16th overall (second round) in the 1999 Major League Soccer (MLS) College Draft out of James Madison University. As a MetroStars defender, he started in 8 of 11 games played, for a total of 732 minutes. [more +]
> Crystal Palace USA invites seven candidates to senior preseason camp Crystal Palace Baltimore has invited seven players who participated in the January and February Combines/Tryouts to preseason training with the senior squad, beginning March 3rd 2008. They will compete for two available spots on the squad. A total of eighty players registered for the two weekend tryouts and Palace Baltimore Co-Managers Pete Medd and Jim Cherneski commended all of the trialists for their effort and sportsmanship. Additional new player signings are expected in the coming weeks and will be announced once they have been finalized. [more +]
> Development Academy Showcase to feature all 126 teams in May The U.S. Soccer Development Academy will host the Development Academy Spring Showcase in Rockford, Ill., from May 23-26, 2008, brining all 126 Academy teams from 63 clubs in attendance together for the first time in the Development Academy's short history. All 63 clubs, including two squads from the Under-17 Men's National Team Residency Program, will take full advantage of 16 fields at the Sportscore Two Complex. Each team will play three games across four days of the long weekend, with a rest day on either Saturday or Sunday. [more +]
> Richmond Kickers re-sign Kelvin Jones to secure defensive line The Richmond Kickers welcomed back defender Kelvin Jones to secure their back line for the 2008 season. Specific terms of the contract were not disclosed. A native of Fredericksburg, Virginia, Jones has anchored the central defense for two seasons, leading the team to consecutive regular season titles (2006, 2007). A proven defensive authority, Jones started 19 of 19 games played and contributed to nine shutouts during the 2007 campaign. Prior to his tenure with the Kickers, Jones began his professional career with the Charleston Battery of USL First Division. Battling injury, he made 12 appearances over two seasons (2004, 2005). Named the 2000 Virginia High School Player of the Year, Jones was a member of the Region I ODP and adidas ESP Teams with his international experience extending to the U-20 and U-17 National Team Pools. > Fairfax school board approves redistricting plan for high schools Fairfax County's school board passed a controversial redistricting plan Thursday night that could see siblings attending different high schools and competing against each other on the soccer field. The school system's plan will redistribute students among five high schools. Westfield, South Lakes, Oakton, and Chantilly. Many parents objected to the plan, saying it could split up families. The school board listened to 26 hours of public hearings on the matter, including 500 speeches. Current high school students will remain at their school through graduation. [more +] |

---- Editor's Corner ----
Santino Quaranta's apology: Steven Goff filed a story in today's Washington Post profiling one of D.C. United's former golden boys - Santino Quaranta. At one time, "Tino" represented nothing but the brightest possible future for the league's most successful team. But after never fulfilling the promise he displayed as a 16-year-old rookie midfielder-forward with United seven years ago, after being sidelined by countless injuries, traded twice and waived this winter, the Baltimore native has resurfaced on a trial basis with his original club. Quaranta says he has multiple firm offers from other MLS clubs, but that he has something to prove by earning a 2nd shot with his hometown club.
Planning a soccer vacation: Wes Harvey of the Baltimore Sun's "Alive and Kicking" blog has some great first-hand advice for anyone planning a trip to Europe to watch live soccer. We all need to do more of this! Got your own advice for others? Post a comment on Harvey's blog.
