Gammage is reporting that MLS has tentatively set Feb. 28 as the date to announce the deal. A news conference is expected to be held in the city of Chester, where the team would play in an 18,500-seat stadium to be built beside the Delaware River. Philadelphia has been in the running for the 16th team along with St. Louis, and when Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell announced that the state would provide a key $47 million in funding for the stadium, things likely tilted their way for good. ---- Notes ----
In Maryland State Soccer Association action on February 17th, Maryland Allyance and Baltimore Colts FC both advanced to the finals of state qualifying for the 2008 U.S. Open. Maryland Allyance downed Select FC by a score of 5:2, while Baltimore Colts FC won a tight battle over their rivals AC United. Amazingly, all four semifinalists hail from the Maryland Major Soccer League. Allyance and Colts FC will now meet in the finals for the honor of representing Maryland at the USASA Region I finals, which will determine which teams advance to compete in the 2008 U.S. Open Cup knock-out stage. (Note: Aegean Hawks have already qualified from the Metro DC / Virginia association on the back of their 3-2 win over World Bank back in November.) Real Maryland FC is holding open tryouts for their USL Super-20 team on March 8th and March 22. Players must be born after January 1, 1988 and must pre-regsiter in order to participate. United's Jeff Carroll has undergone toe surgery to repair a ruptured plantar plate in his left big toe. He is expected to miss 3-6 months. The Virginia Tech men's soccer team spring schedule has been released and includes an exhibition against the Richmond Kickers on April 12 at University of Richmond Stadium. The Fredericksburg Generals will play their final regular season game of 2007-08 on Saturday, February 23rd at the Fredericksburg Field House. The game will feature the annual Generals Game Worn Jersey Auction.
---- Editor's Corner ----
Baltimore Bays Correction: We made a mistake in tabulating the US Soccer Development Academy Winter Showcase results in Tuesday's issue. The Baltimore Bays actually went 3-1-0, not 1-3-0. Congratulations on a great weekend. Sorry for the mistake.
The Houllier way: Matt Badiee, Assistant Technical Director for VYSA, sent me this and asked that we share it with our readers. It is a great article/interview with Gerard Houllier, the renowned coach who has pledged his future to helping develop French soccer stars. Most important first step? Developing technical skills at a young age.
