> Egypt wins African Cup of Nations 1-0 over Cameroon With a 1-0 victory over Cameroon, Egypt has repeated as champions of the African Cup after dominating the semi-annual tournament with consistently strong performances, including a 4-1 semi-final victory over an impressive Ivory Coast with resident assassin Didier Drogba. In all, 16 teams competed, with four groups of four seeing their first and second place finishers to the quarterfinals. Both tournament finalists came from the group, and had faced each other in their openers, where Egypt won 4-2. This is Egypt's sixth time as champions of Africa. Host Ghana also had an impressive tournament, making it to the semi-finals, and then defeating Ivory Coast 4-2 on Saturday for 3rd place. [more +]
> U.S. Men set two friendlies in Europe against Poland and Spain The U.S. Men's National Team will play a pair of friendlies in Europe this spring, traveling to face Poland and Spain in preparation for the start of 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifying. The United States will first meet Poland on March 26 in Krakow, the match falling on the final international fixture date before the start of qualifying. On June 4, the U.S. travels to face fourth-ranked Spain just six days before the Spaniards open group play in the 2008 European Championship against Russia. [more +]

Saturday's 12-4 win over the Orlando Sharks in Orlando, brining their total points scored against the Sharks in four meetings this season to an impressive 66. Leading the list on the girls side is Katie Baumgardner of Potomac Falls, who has accepted a scholarship to play at Ohio State. On the boys side, Potomac Falls was in the news again, sending Virginia Gatorade Player of the Year Uche Onyeador to Georgetown. > Two local boys make National USL Super-Y Select Teams United Soccer Leagues Super Y-League ODP National Camps for boys '92 and '93/'94 age groups drew to a close in Cocoa, Florida on Sunday. Over 300 of the best players from Super-Y teams around the country participated for the chance to make the national select team, and potentially be invited to train with West Ham United's youth academy in England. Michael Howard from Richmond Strikers was named to the '93/'94 team, while Jacob Doyle from Northern Virginia Royals made the '92 squad. [more +]

Sean Dreybus, Newport News, VA. has signed a National Letter of Intent to play soccer at Division I Appalachian State, NC in 2008.
Casey Ellerman, a four-year starter for Holton-Arms School in Arlington, Va., has signed a National Letter of Intent to play soccer at Miami University.
Alyssa Gazarek, a Freedom High School senior, has verbally committed to the University of South Florida. Gazarak plays club soccer for the McLean Freedom.
Adam Klink, a native of Chesapeake, Va. and 2007 Southeastern District Goalkeeper of the Year, will continue his academic and athletic career at Rutgers University, competing for the Scarlet Knight soccer program in 2008. Klink played his club ball with Virginia Rush from 2003-08 and was a member of the Virginia State ODP team from 2005-07.
Diana Weigel (Fairfax, Va./Woodson High School) and Stephanie Gerow (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac High School) have signed National Letters of Intent and will join the William and Mary Tribe for the 2008 season.
