A consummate holding midfielder, the Springfield, Va. native is expected to be a major cog in the Columbus midfield, taking on the unglamorous, labor-intensive responsibilities of his strongest position.

Virginia standout Jeremy Barlow was selected by the Houston Dynamo in the fourth round of the MLS SuperDraft and teammates Yannick Reyering (FC Dallas), Chris Tierney (New England Revolution) and Zola Short (Columbus Crew) were selected in the Supplemental Draft. Barlow and Short are both seniors and both from northern Virginia - Barlow from Herndon and Short from Arlington. After playing at Virginia, 39 former Cavaliers have gone on to play Major League Soccer. Last season there were 11 former Virginia players in MLS, representing seven of the 13 clubs.

Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell announced plans on Thursday for $47 million in state funding to assist in the construction of an expected 18,500-seat stadium on Chester's waterfront. Rendell attended the press conference along with state Senate Majority Leader Dominic Pileggi (R-Chester), developer Robert Buccini of the Wilmington, Delaware-based Buccini/Pollin Group, Chester Mayor Wendell Butler Jr. and Delaware County Council Chairman Linda Cartisano, along with several other high-profile businesses executives and council members. Chester is still competing with St. Louis for the 16th MLS team slot, the last expected to be awarded for several years. MLS currently features 14 teams with San Jose's team beginning play this season and a team in Seattle starting in 2009.

United announced today plans for a preseason exhibition in Richmond, VA with the USL-2 Richmond Kickers, Saturday, March 22. Kick-off for the game is set for 7:00 p.m. at the University of Richmond Stadium. This preseason exhibition will serve as United's final warm-up game prior to the start of the MLS season. The game will also mark the end of a preseason schedule that includes trips to Bradenton, FL, central and southern California and San Antonio, TX as the club prepares for the 2008 CONCACAF Champions' Cup and this year's Major League Soccer season.

The Richmond Kickers Future of the Premier Development League announced the signing of new head coach Kyle Lessig. Future midfielder and captain Andy McIntosh will continue to act as a player/assistant coach. Soccer America Magazine has released its annual list of top youth clubs in the country. On the boys side, Baltimore Bays came in at number seven. On the girls side, McLean Premier Soccer burst into the top 10 with a number seven rating. And once again, the area's model for consistency in putting out great teams - Bethesda Soccer Club placed on both boys and girls lists for the fourth time out of five years with number 15 on the boys side, and 23 on the girls.

FC Fredericksburg Gunners midfielder Adrian Bumbutt became the first player in franchise history to be drafted in the professional ranks, as he was chosen in the 2nd round of the supplemental draft by MLS' Chicago Fire. Bumbutt was one of the top players on the Gunners in their inaugural USL professional season in 2007, scoring 5 goals, 2 assists, and earning All-Conference Honors. The talented midfielder was also instrumental in helping Liberty University get to the 2007 NCAA playoffs.

Coming off a championship at the 2008 Four Nations Tournament in China, U.S. head coach Pia Sundhage has called 37 players to the next U.S. Women's National Team training camp that begins on Feb. 1 at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. The camp is part of preparations for the CONCACAF Olympic Women's Qualifying Tournament in April, as well as the first phase of choosing a 20-player roster for the 2008 Algarve Cup, March 5-12. Notably absent is local player Ali Krieger, as she has returned to Germany to play with FFC Frankfurt.

Monday's annual awards banquet for the Maryland Association of Coaches of Soccer in Glen Burnie was more than just an annual meeting this year for Walkersville boys coach Kevin Conley and Urbana girls coach Chuck Nichols. At the banquet, both were named MACS coaches of the year, a special award reserved for an elite group of coaches. Conley's Lions enjoyed one of their best seasons under his watch. Walkersville went 10-2-2 and shared the Piedmont Conference title with Middletown. Nichols, who coached Thomas Johnson to two state girls soccer championships, guided the Urbana girls soccer team to the state Class 3A championship last fall.

George Mason men's soccer Head Coach Greg Andrulis announced the addition of former U.S. U-17 National Team star Axel Levry to the team's roster on Thursday. The Fort Washington, Md. native is expected to provide an immediate spark to the team at the midfield/forward spot next season. In addition to his U-17 National Team experience, Levry earned numerous accolades for his impressive play. He is a two-time NSCAA/adidas Boys Youth All-America Team selection, making the team in 2006 and 2007. Levry also earned PARADE All-America honors in 2007 as one of the top players in the nation.

D.C. United Academy's Julio Arjona has been invited to join the U.S. U-17 Men's National Team residency program in Bradenton, FL. Arjona originally joined the D.C. United Academy in January of 2007 from the Bethesda Roadrunners.
Towson Tigers Billy Chiles and Pat Healey were selected in the MLS Supplemental Draft. Chiles was selected by the Columbus Crew with the sixth pick in the first round while Healey followed as the 11th pick of the first round by the Kansas City Wizards.
Northern Virginia Majestic Breiana White was named to the elite ODP '91 Select Team roster.
Herndon High School's Kate Goldin will sign her National Letter of Intent on Friday, Feb. 8 and will attend Vanderbilt University on a soccer scholarship next school year.

The Baltimore Blast selected five college players in Tuesday's MISL Amateur Draft. They are Pat Healey, midfielder from Towson University, Bryan Moffa, from UMBC, Chris Cox, midfielder from Hofstra University, Omar Alfonso, forward from St. John's University, and Matt Davis, defender from George Washington University.
UMBC will induct eight new members into its Athletic Hall of Fame on Feb. 9.
Crystal Palace Baltimore's Ibrahim Kante has been invited to try out for the Kansas City Wizards.
The Hampton Roads Piranhas will open at home on May 10 against the Northern Virginia Royals at 7 p.m.
Tara Koleski has resigned as head women's soccer coach at UMBC effective Tuesday, Jan. 22, UMBC athletic director Dr. Charles Brown announced.
