> Jaime Moreno signs new contract with D.C. United D.C. United announced Thursday the re-signing of Major League Soccer's all-time goal-scoring leader Jaime Moreno. Moreno, despite spending the 2003 season with the MetroStars, has been with United since the inception of MLS in 1996. The Bolivian forward has played in 259 games (248 starts) in his career with the Black-and-Red. Despite injuries and international obligations, Moreno broke the League's goal scoring mark with his 109th goal on August 22 against the New York Red Bulls. In all, the legendary forward has been a driving force on the field behind all eleven of United's major domestic and international titles, a record unapproached by any club in the history of American professional soccer. United's spring training camp, which begins Monday. [more +]
> U.S. names largely domestic players for Mexico match Feb. 6th U.S. Men's National Team head coach Bob Bradley has recalled 21 players to U.S. Soccer's National Training Center at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. to begin preparations for the match against Mexico. It is no guarantee that many of them will be on the actual game day roster as the match falls on an international match date, meaning Bradley is free to call in any U.S. player in the world. With over 43,000 tickets already sold, and the depth of the rivalry with Mexico, expect nearly a dozen European-based players to be called in February 3rd. [more +]
> Zach Wells called back to MNT, will miss first D.C. United training D.C. United announced Thursday that goalkeeper Zach Wells is among 21 players named to the training camp roster in preparation for the U.S. Men's National Team's upcoming game against Mexico. Wells will be at the Los Angeles-based camp with the team at least through February 3rd, possibly longer if named to the roster for the Mexico match Feburary 6th in Houston. He will definitely miss the opening of D.C. United's spring training on Monday and has yet to formally train with his new team after being acquired from Houston in the off-season. [more +]

Adam Cristman is the lone local on the roster and looks to make a good impression for a shot at Olympic gold. [more +]

---- Boasts ----
US Youth Soccer announced that James "Jay" Hoffman is the recipient of the Dr. Thomas Fleck, US Youth Soccer Excellence in Coaching Education Award and will be honored at the US Youth Soccer Awards Gala on Friday, February 8 in Pittsburgh.
Norfolk Academy's Sheldon Cohn has been named the National Soccer Coaches Association of America High School Assistant Coach of the Year.
Thirty two Roanoke Star players have been named to the Virginia Olympic Development State Pools.
Eight U10G Arlington travel club Rowdies won the round-robin style VA Futsal State Cup tournament and will head for Boston, MA over President's Day weekend in February to compete in the Region I Championships.
FASA / FC Fredericksburg Lady Gunner players, Kara Blosser, Ashley Herndon and Beth Wilson, will be attending the National ODP Camp in Florida in January / February.
---- Notes ---- The Richmond Kickers Youth Soccer Club and the Poseidon Swimming Foundation announced on Tuesday plans to build a state-of-the-art sports complex in Chesterfield County featuring six new athletic fields and a full-scale aquatics center at the intersection of Chippenham Parkway and Route 10. Construction is expected to begin in June 2008.
The FC Fredericksburg Lady Gunners have announced their 2008 schedule which will begin with a home game against defending W-League Champions Washington Freedom on Saturday, May 24th.
United Soccer Leagues announced the official schedule for the Premier Development League's 2008 regular season which opens April 26 and concludes July 20. ---- Editor's Corner ---- Jeremy Barlow: UVA's Jeremy Barlow has the distinct "honor" of being drafted with the last pick in last Friday's MLS SuperDraft. It's not a knock at all considering the hundreds of players who come out of college soccer each year dreaming of even getting a shot at playing in MLS, let alone a shot with the 2-time defending champions (Houston Dynamo). Jeremy is a Herndon, VA native, played club ball for Reston FC, and then starred for four years at the University of Virginia. We wish him luck, although not too much luck, unless he ends up wearing a D.C. United jersey!
Ebbsfleet United: You may have read in my blog that I am now the proud (partial) owner of an honest to goodness professional soccer team in the UK. Don't be jealous though, you can be one too for just about $70 US. Check out MyFootballClub, and if you sign up, let me know. I'd honestly like to set up a local D.C. ownership chapter, perhaps even plan a trip to a game.
Soccer IQ: Just published an article on our web site about why it's so beneficial for youth players AND their parents to watch as much live soccer as possible. Not as a fan, but as a student. I believe there is an enormous "sophistication gap" between players and parents in the US as compared to others around the world. We need to increase our soccer IQ, and it starts with learning what we don't know we don't know. The only way to learn that is to watch and listen as much as possible at the highest possible level. I hope the article is helpful, and welcome your feedback and other ideas for improving soccer IQ. If you like it, I hope you'll link to it from your club/team web site, or send the link to your members by email. You're welcome to post a summary directly on your web site or in a newsletter too, so long as there's a clear link to the full article on our web site.
