> MLS Draft being held today in Baltimore, on ESPN2 at 2PM
At least three area soccer players are among those eagerly awaiting today's Major League Soccer SuperDraft at the Baltimore Convention Center. Towson University midfielder Pat Healey, goalkeeper Billy Chiles, and University of Maryland midfielder Stephen King could go in the four-round draft. The annual amateur draft, which begins at 2 p.m., is open to the public and will feature 14 teams selecting a total of 56 players. As of this writing (trades still possible), the Kansas City Wizards will draft first after making a trade with the expansion San Jose Earthquakes and will be followed by FC Dallas. D.C. United does not pick until the second round, 24th overall.

> Krieger goes 90 minutes in 4-0 defeat of Canada at Four Nations
Northern Virginia native and former Washington Freedom player Ali Krieger got her first cap in a starting role for the United States Women's team early this morning in China. In their first game of the [nearly] annual Four Nations Tournament, the U.S. women cruised to a 4-0 win over North American neighbors Canada. Amy Rodriguez started along side Abby Wambach for the first time, with former reserve forward Heath O'Reilly out on the wing. "Hea-O" was at the rear of all four goals, with three direct assists. Krieger started at right back, but was moved to central defense after fellow debutante Becky Sauerbrunn broke her nose on the back of a Candadian player's head and had to be substituted in the 64th minute.

> Gordon Miller: Look before you leap to a D1 youth team
Some parents believe that their child must play on a winning team in division 1, all the time, to guarantee automatic success in later years. It does not. They believe that if their coach isn't winning the overwhelming majority of games, they need to move their child to a "successful" program with a "winning" coach. Some feel that even if their child isn't getting quality playing time, being on a winning team is what is really important. These parents are doing a great disservice to their children.

---- Editor's Corner ----

Look before you leap: Thanks to Gordon Miller for allowing us to publish his article on the potential pitfalls of choosing a youth team/program based on their wins and losses. Personally, I think this article should be required reading for every parent of a U8 player considering going travel. Once you've read it, pop on to our discussion forums and answer some of the questions I posed there. Your feedback will only help our local soccer community improve communications and sharing of ideas. If you're involved in youth soccer in any way, you must have an opinion about the development vs. winning topic. I hope you will share.

NSCAA Duty: Potomac Soccer Wire is at the NSCAA show and MLS Superdraft in force. Look for stories next week from Charles Boehm and Mandy Schulz, as well as some blog entries from your truly. If you have the chance, visiting the convention would be worth the time and money, and it's not every day the largest soccer-specific trade show is right in our back yard.

A Coach's Passion: Gotta love anytime a reported takes time to profile someone who's dedicated a good part of their lives to the sport we love. Here's one by Chris Brown of Gazette.net helping us all get to know John Cunha a little bit better.
