> Va. Tech's Patrick Nyarko signs with MLS
Virginia Tech's star, junior Patrick Nyarko, has signed with MLS and is expected to be a top three pick in the upcoming SuperDraft in Baltimore next week. Nyarko had said after the Hokies semifinal loss in the College Cup last month that he was returning for his Senior year and to get his college degree, but has apparently decided that going pro now is his best option. The forward from Ghana scored 31 goals and 24 assists in 57 collegiate matches and may go as the first overall draft pick. He is also a M.A.C. Herman Trophy finalist. [more +]

> United likely to sign Argentine striker this week According to several news reports, D.C. United is in the late stages of negotiations to acquire Argentine forward Franco Niell. Niell, 24, has spent his entire career with Argentinos Juniors, a first division club from Buenos Aires Argentina. The club is renowned for developing young talent. He has been on the team's senior roster since 2004 and has accumulated 10 career goals in 60 league appearances. Besides his quickness and skill, Niell stands out on the soccer field because he stands just 5-foot, 4-inches. But he's a solid 145 pounds and has proven he can hold his own in one of the world's most physical leagues. [ more +]
> Eddie Pope to head player relations for union in BethesdaFormer D.C. United hero and eleven-time MLS All-Star Eddie Pope has been named director of player relations for the MLS Player Union. He has appeared in three World Cups for the U.S. national team and represented the United States at the 1996 Olympics. Among his duties to oversee all player communications and relations, Pope will have a hand in negotiating a collective bargaining agreement to replace the current deal, which is due to expire at the end of the 2009 season. With MLS players earning less than $15,000 per year in some cases, the negotiations for a new agreement are expected to focus on player pay as the league is in a much better financial position than when the prior agreement was negotiated.
