> Ferguson climbing ladder in Maryland and Barbados
Most Washington, D.C.-area soccer fans have probably never heard of Daryl Ferguson, the tall center back who became one of the first players to sign with new USL-2 club Real Maryland this month. But, before attending his games at the Maryland Soccer Plex this summer, you could see him lining up against the full United States National Team
in World Cup Qualifying.

> Teams officially announce sale of Troy Perkins to Norwegian club
D.C. United has agreed to transfer Troy Perkins to a Norwegian club, ending a four-year association in which the goalie evolved from an un-drafted rookie who kept a part-time job to one of the best keepers in Major League Soccer. Oslo-based Valerenga will pay approximately $750,000 for Perkins, who signed a five-year contract valued at an estimated $200,000 annually. United will collect two-thirds of the transfer fee directly.

> Unfinished story lines of 2007 in soccer
It is a measure of what a remarkable year 2007 was for world soccer that the main storylines of the last 12 months don't figure to change a whole lot when we turn the calendar over next Monday night. The key stories - Beckham and America, the power of English league football and the increasing effects of money, gambling and power in the world game - are still unfolding.

> US Youth Soccer National League boys update from Disney Showcase
US Youth Soccer National League play resumed yesterday in Florida as part of Disney's Soccer Showcase. The Under-15 and Under-16 boys are kicking off the weekend and the girls teams will begin play on Sunday, December 30 through Wednesday, January 2. More than 900 college coaches are expected to be in attendance for the week-long event, according to the Disney soccer organizers.

> Adu has grown on his own in Portugal, is a fan favorite
Freddy Adu was home for the Christmas Holiday this week, but is off again to winter training in Portugal after visiting with family and friends for first time since leaving for Europe. He's grown quite a bit since leaving MLS, and is a fan favorite, averaging a goal for every 60 minutes of play time, despite a primary role as a late substitute (so far).

ALERT: Potomac Soccer Wire newsletter will not publish this Tuesday due to the New Year Holiday. We will return next Friday, January 4th. The web site will be updated regularly with new local soccer news.

---- Boasts ----

Delaware High School coach Steve Kilby has been named regional coach of the year, an area that includes Maryland. He will be honored at the National Soccer Coaches Association of America convention in February in Baltimore.

---- Notes ----

Region I sub-league (Colonial/WAPS) posted accepted team lists for the spring season. 29 teams from Maryland and Virginia included.

WAGS is seeking an Administrative Assistant.

FASA announces new Spring tournament to be held at the new Dixon Park Soccer Complex on March 29th & 30th.

---- Editor's Corner ----

31 Goals: US Soccer's video crew has posted all 31 Men's national team goals from 2007. Besides Benny's Gold Cup miracle, which is your favorite?

Foreign players in MLS: Steve Davis of ESPN weighs in on the new MLS foreign player rules, calling it an good offensive move by the league.

Yank Owners in EPL: If you follow the EPL at all (if you don't know what EPL stands for, you don't follow it), you'll find this article interesting. Two of the big four clubs have American owners, with the third competing in the top 10. Funny thing though - not one of the three have an American player on the roster, despite seven yanks starting for other EPL clubs on Wednesday.
