> 2007 U.S. Soccer Athletes of the Year announced
For their excellence at the highest levels of the sport, U.S. Soccer named U.S. Men's National Team midfielder/forward Clint Dempsey as the 2007 Male Athlete of the Year and U.S. Women's National Team forward Abby Wambach as the 2007 Female Athlete of the Year. MNT and Under-20 MNT midfielder Michael Bradley and WNT and U-20 WNT forward Lauren Cheney won the Young Male and Young Female Awards, respectively.

> D.C. United draw Jamaica's Harbor View first for Champions' Cup
D.C. United will face Harbour View FC (Jamaica) in its first round match- up of the annual CONCACAF Cup. Every match-up but the final features a home and away, two-game series, with the team playing home second considered to have the advantage. Should United advance to the finals of the tournament, it would enjoy home field advantage throughout. The tournament's quarterfinal series will begin mid-March, with United traveling to Jamaica for the first leg March 11-13 and the second leg taking place at home March 18-20. The winner of the series will advance to face either Pachuca (Mexico) or Motagua (Honduras) in the semifinal round.

> U.S. learns Group A opponents for CONCACAF Men's U-23 tournament
The U.S. has learned that it will host Cuba, Honduras and Panama in Tampa, Fla., for the 2008 CONCACAF Men's Under-23 Championship. The games in Tampa will be played on March 11, 13 and 15. The final schedule match will be announced by CONCACAF at a later date. Group B features Canada, Guatemala, Haiti and Mexico, and will begin on March 12 in Carson, Calif. The semifinals and final will be played in Nashville, TN. The two finalists qualify for the 2008 Summer Olympics. The U.S. failed to qualify in 2004 after losing to Mexico in the semi-finals.

Duke Director of Athletics Joe Alleva announced on Tuesday that John Kerr has been named the school's sixth head men's soccer coach. The Duke Hall of Fame alum and former Northern Virginia resident replaces John Rennie, who compiled a 410-161-34 record in 29 seasons at the helm of the Blue Devil program.

> MLS makes competition changes, allows more foreign players
Major League Soccer announced several amendments to the 2008 competition guidelines voted on and approved by the MLS Board of Governors during its most recent meeting, held in Washington, D.C. prior to MLS Cup 2007. The most notable amendments include the addition of one international player slot per team, and declaring Donovan, Johnson, and Ruiz exempt from Designated Player status.

The U.S. Under-17 Women's National Team finished its three-game trip to Argentina on a high note with a 3-0 win over the Uruguay U-17 Women's National Team on Dec. 15. The U.S. team had lost the first game of the tour to the Argentina U-17 Women's National Team by a 2-1 score on Dec. 11, before rebounding with a 2-0 win over the Argentina Under-20 WNT on Dec. 13.

Washington Post All Met Girls Teams announced.

Baltimore Sun 2007 Fall All-Metro/All-County Teams and other awards announced.

Former FC Virginia Rockets player Laura Pastor had an outstanding first season at Virginia Commonwealth University this fall. She registered two goals and an assist, and was named to the CAA All-Rookie team.

Virginia Sports Information Directors 2007 All-State Men's Soccer Teams are posted. College Division and University Division.

Virginia Sports Information Directors 2007 All-State Women's Soccer Teams are posted for the College Division. University Division is not yet posted.

The National Soccer Coaches Association of America has announced NSCAA/adidas High School Regional Coaches of the Year for boys' and girls' interscholastic play. The lists include two coaches from schools in our region.

Phil Benne, Roanoke College, was named to the NSCAA/adidas Regional Coaches of the Year for women's intercollegiate play in Division III.

The National Soccer Coaches Association of America has announced its NSCAA/adidas Regional Coaches of the Year for boys' and girls' youth play. Steve Nicols (Owings Mill, MD) and Clyde Watson (Washington, D.C.) are on the list.

Two coaches from junior colleges in our region are on the NSCAA/adidas Regional Coaches of the Year for men's and women's junior college play.

Sheldon Cohn, Norfolk Academy and Michael Brizendine, Virginia Tech are on the NSCAA/adidas Regional Assistant Coaches of the Year for interscholastic and intercollegiate play lists.

Howard Community College men's soccer player Michael Carey and women's soccer players Emily Birzak and Whitney Rhodes were named All-American by the National Junior College Athletic Association.

United Soccer Leagues has set up on-demand web streaming of select matches from the 2007 Super Y-League North American Finals. Nine matches are currently available for free on USLlive.com. Including these nine, a total of 84 matches were filmed during the five-day championship event, and will be available via DVD.

Boys Rosters for 2007 US Youth Soccer ODP Super Group were announced on Wednesday. Teams will compete from December 27-30, 2007.
