> New professional team getting Real in Maryland
Real Maryland F.C. will begin play in the Second Division of the United Soccer Leagues in April, but the buzz is already building as the newborn club builds a roster from scratch and reaches out to area soccer fans this winter. Having already announced the team's identity, colors, and first signing - former Major League Soccer star Ronald Cerritos - in September, RMFC officials discussed their latest progress at a press conference in Silver Spring, Md. this week.

> Maryland State Board gives approval for new synthetic fields
Anne Arundel County's goal to cover 12 public school fields with artificial turf was considered a pipe dream by many when the plan was revealed last spring. Yesterday, the plan moved a step closer to reality and those days of skepticism are dwindling. County Executive John R. Leopold announced yesterday the Maryland Board of Public Works approved funding to outfit Annapolis, Arundel and North County high schools with safety turf playing surfaces at their existing stadiums.

Jason Moore, an Eastern Mennonite University graduate, is the new director of coaching and the first full-time employee for the Harrisonburg Soccer Association, founded in 1995.

The U-18 FASA Impact went undefeated in six Virginia Champions League Showcase games during recent weekends.

The PASL Winchester Impact dropped its first contest to the Maryland Tigers 18-4, but other than the score it seemed to be a total success for the area's first Premier Arena Soccer League club last Sunday.

Richmond Strikers showed well at Nike Friendlies in Bradenton with a 4-2 overall record.

---- Editor's Corner ----

Hokie Football: The Hokies still have a shot at winning a national championship in football this year, the original "football." And while the team's success hasn't garnered quite the attention reserved in Blacksburg for the American version, hundreds of orange-and-maroon-clad fans are expected to make the trip to Cary, N.C., to cheer on the Virginia Tech men's soccer team in the semifinals of the NCAA tournament Friday.

Potomac Soccer Wire at College Cup: Hokie fans from Blacksburg aren't the only ones going to Cary. Potomac Soccer Wire has dispatched new reporter Mandy Schulz to Cary to cover Hokies, so watch for her reports on www.potomacsoccerwire.com this weekend! If you would like a copy of her stories emailed directly to you over the weekend, just reply to this email with the word Hokies in the subject line.

Fever Pitch spreads to Young Adults: One of my favorite writers, Nick Hornby, has a new book out. Based on his novel Fever Pitch, I'm just going to say it's a new book worth the read before I've even read it. His new novel is called Slam, and it's his first targeted at the "YA" market (Young Adult). But we're all kids at heart, as well as soccer fans, so give it a read, then give it to your kids.

Bye to Bobby Boswell: Dan Steinberg says farewell to Bobby Boswell in his own way yesterday in his Sports Bog on WashingtonPost.com.

Crazy Japanese Soccer: Try playing soccer in the daytime with night-vision goggles. Could you do better than these guys. Wold be a great half time show at a future DC game! Of course setting up a regular game with some of the referees from the last World Cup as the players might produce the same level of quality without any need for goggles.
