---- Editor's Corner ---- MLS Roster Size: Frank Dell'Apa of ESPN makes a compelling plea to MLS management to increase roster sizes sooner rather than later. The current maximum is just 28 total players, and only 18 senior players. MLS's top teams, which include our D.C. United, could play 50 games in a year, with their top players playing even more due to National Team duties. Similar schedules for professional teams in other countries are the main reason for carrying dozens of full professionals on a roster, with many MLS opponents in international competitions not having any roster limits at all. Playing more international games is a great opportunity for MLS and American soccer, but playing them handicapped by smaller rosters and little talent depth undermines the whole point.
Head Safety: Howard County has introduced computer tests to help recognize concussions and avoid potentially life-threatening situations. Glenelg girls soccer goalie Kerry Krammer doesn't remember much about last month's state soccer championship. Late in the first half, as Krammer went hard into a slide tackle against a breakaway opponent, her head slammed into the opponent's knee. The next thing she recalls is the car ride home from Anne Arundel Medical Center that night. To help assess those traumatic brain injuries, Howard County officials are introducing imPACT, Immediate Post-concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing, to all 12 of the county's public high schools.
