> Hokies earn NCAA Quarterfinal berth, defeat Old Dominion 1-0
MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalist Patrick Nyarko scored the game-winning goal for the No. 11 seed Virginia Tech men's soccer team against Old Dominion in the third round of the NCAA Championship at Tech Soccer Stadium. Tech (13-3-5) earned its first-ever trip to the quarterfinal round by out-shooting Old Dominion 10-8 and playing tough defense throughout the match, limiting the Monarchs to just one shot on goal. The Hokies will play No. 3 seed Connecticut in an NCAA Championship Quarterfinal match at 1 p.m., next Saturday in Storrs, Conn.

> Maryland lose late lead, then ousted by Bradley in OT
Sasho Cirovski called Maryland's 3-2 loss to Bradley in the NCAA tournament's round of 16 Saturday night the most difficult in his 15 seasons as coach of the Terrapins' men's soccer team. Cirovski watched as the Terrapins relinquished a two-goal lead in the final 2 1/2 minutes of regulation at chilly Ludwig Field and then a controversial sudden-death goal with just over a minute left in OT.

> Rally falls short as Blast loses again
The Blast pushed the California Cougars around, created numerous scoring chances and got three goals and six points in the game's final 10 minutes Saturday night. But it was too little too late. California had jumped out to an early six-goal lead, and the Blast rallied to cut the deficit to two twice in the fourth quarter. But the Cougars hung on to hand the Blast its second loss in two nights, a 12-10 decision in front of an announced 8,604 at 1st Mariner Arena.

The field will include champions from each league, plus David Beckham's LA Galaxy February 20-24, 2008.

> United nearing signing of Juan Sebastian Veron under Beckham rule
D.C. United waived four reserves Wednesday, but the big change this offseason could be the addition of Argentine star midfielder Juan Sebastian Veron. There are reports that United is on the verge of signing Veron, who would come to the team under the designated player option or the "Beckham Rule." The option allows a team to sign a big-name player whose earnings come mostly outside the salary cap. Veron, 32, is expected to make a decision on his career this month when his contract with Argentina's Estudiantes de la Plata runs out. United will begin playing in competitive games in mid-March, when the CONCACAF Champions' Cup begins.

> Dorrance sexual harassment trial set for April
A sexual harassment lawsuit against the University of North Carolina women's soccer coach is scheduled to go before a jury on April 7th of next year. Former player Melissa Jennings accuses her former coach, Anson Dorrance, of sexually harassing players on the team. She says that environment violated Title IX by denying her the benefits of collegiate sports. A federal judge dismissed the case in 2004, but the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals sent the case back for a jury trial.

---- Editor's Corner ----

United's best games: MLSNet.com picked the top 10 games of the 2007 season this week. Two of which involved United at RFK. I'll give you two hints, but you'll have to click the link to find out for sure: July 14 and November 1.

Crofton Native Shines in MLS: Did you know MLS star and National Team player Kyle Beckerman is from Crofton? Before the professional level, Beckerman honed his skills for various area club teams and Arundel High. He credits those formative years for much of his current success, saying he thinks we have some of the best training ground for youth soccer in Maryland, Washington, D.C., and northern Virginia.

Olympic hopefuls: U23 Olympic Coach Peter Nowak is looking to find the right mix of players, but little time to work it all out. The Beijing Olympics are more than eight months away, but he will need most of that time to mold together a team capable of pushing for a medal. Several players with local ties seem poised to be part of the nucleus, while others have been given what is likely a single chance to impress before tough decisions are made. Ives Galarcep breaks it all down.

MLS Marketing 101: Steve Davis of ESPN absolutely nails my feelings on what's wrong with most of the people trying to market MLS teams in this country. And don't be fooled by United's success at the turnstiles, they're in the same boat, but blessed with an ideal location - albeit extremely costly. They beat the suburban bushes better then any team, but they have to keep selling seats game after game after game, and that must get tiring. The goal is definitely for the games to sell themselves so the team can worry more about client experience than be troubled with client acquisition. Once that happens, soccer will have finally "made it" here. Poplar Point would be a fantastic start, but for anyone outside the city limits it could be a nightmare scenario.

Adu in NY Times: Freddy Adu says he is happy playing, even sporadically, for Benfica in Portugal. Check out the update on how Freddy's doing in Europe.
