> Nowak names U23 roster for Olympic Qualifying tune ups in China
U.S. Under-23 Men's National Team head coach Peter Nowak has called 22 players into training camp at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., in preparation for a two-match tour in China where the U.S. will face the Chinese U-23 national team.  This will be the first gathering of the U-23 MNT since Nowak took the reins in August, and is the first major camp in preparation for the final round action of the 2008 CONCACAF Men's Under-23 Championship to be held from March 11-23, 2008, in Los Angeles, Tampa and Nashville. The eight-team tournament will send the two finalists to the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

> Maryland edges Loyola in PKs to advance in NCAA Tournament
Maryland advanced to the round of 16 in NCAA Tournament play after 110 frigid minutes Wednesday night. Freshmen GoalKeeper Thorne Holder shivered on the Ludwig Field sideline for most of the match before entering to man the pipes in overtime and eventually win the game in PKs. Regulation and overtime tested the Terrapins' patience. They out shot the Greyhounds 18-5 and had an 8-0 advantage on corner kicks, but only a few opportunities were truly dangerous.

> Hokies down California, 3-2, advance in NCAA Championship
Sophomore midfielder Charlie Campbell's career-high performance of two goals propelled the 11th-seeded Virginia Tech men's soccer team to its first victory in the NCAA Championship with a 3-2 win over California on Wednesday at Tech Soccer Stadium. Tech (12-3-5) advanced in the NCAA Championship for the second time in school history despite being slightly out-shot by the Golden Bears, 13-10. The Hokies host Old Dominion in the third round of the NCAA Championship at 1 p.m., on Sunday in Tech Soccer Stadium, where they boast a 6-0-1 mark this season.

> Virginia men out of NCAA Tournament with loss to WVU
For the first time in program history, the West Virginia University men's soccer team (14-5-2) has advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 after defeating Virginia (12-8-2), 1-0, in the second round of the NCAA tournament. Senior Dan Stratford scored the game-winning goal at the 50 minute mark off of a set piece, after WVU was awarded a free kick five yards outside of the box. Stratford shot a bullet into the top left corner of the net that went untouched by Virginia's goalkeeper.

> ODU upsets Brown, will face Virginia Tech in Sweet 16
Old Dominion upset sixth-seeded Brown in NCAA Division I tournament second-round game Wednesday night. With just 3:15 left in the second overtime, ODU's Ambane Emmanuel thwarted Brown's offside trap perfectly and scored a breakaway goal that gave the Monarchs a 2-1 victory. ODU advances to this weekend's third round where it will play 11th-seeded Virginia Tech, which beat the University of California 3-2.

---- Editor's Corner ----

Red Bull Park: OK, not directly related to our area - but any news about a new MLS soccer stadium has to be covered! No way we can let the Metroturds get a new house.

Too much soccer: Baltimore Examiner writer Effie Dawson examines the pressure for kids to play sports year round.

Baltimore Blast: I don't think the Baltimore Blast get enough coverage. I remember growing up playing soccer in rural Pennsylvania in the 80s and having Philadelphia Fever as my only exposure to "professional soccer". I even had two of those old orange MISL balls with black stars. If you coach a youth team, take them to a game in Baltimore. It is fantastic entertainment. Check out this article on Blast Forward Machel Millwood.

Bob Bradley: Jeff Carlisle of ESPN says Bob Bradleys first year at the helm of the US Men's team is a promising start.

Eddie Pope: Soccer365.com is reporting Eddie Pope would like to be D.C. United's GM. I'm sure Dave Kasper would have something to say about that, but also assume if Eddie wants a front office post at DCU, that Kevin Payne would find a way to make that happen. Could get interesting if this is anything more than just a passing comment by the newly retired Pope.

Veron Rumors: It's not secret that Juan Sebastian Veron is likely to be joining D.C. United very soon as our first Designated Player. But it's finally made the "official" gossip pages on BBC.com. That means it must be true right?
