> Maryland alum Maurice Edu named top rookie
Major League Soccer's naming of Toronto FC midfielder Maurice Edu as its rookie of the year surprised, well, nobody. He was the leading candidate for the award, according to fan voting on the league's website. In August, a reporter from Sports Illustrated watched a TFC game and declared the 21-year-old Californian the team's best player. And Edu himself said he made winning the award a goal before the season started, then tried every game to meet the standard he had set.

> United's Gros giving thought to retirement
D.C. United midfielder Josh Gros, a starter most of the past four years, is contemplating retirement after suffering three head injuries this year and missing the final month of the MLS season. With Gros's return unlikely, United is not expected to include him on its 11-man protected list before this month's expansion draft. San Jose, which will return to the league next year, will have the opportunity to select one player from each of the existing 13 clubs.

> Liverpool set Champions League record with 8-0 win
Liverpool regained their European pride and gave themselves a fighting chance to salvage their Champions League dreams with a stunning 8-0 defeat of a woeful Besiktas. Anything but a victory would have ended Liverpool's chances of qualifying for the last 16, but although they still have to beat Porto and Marseille in their final two matches, there is at last hope to cling onto for under-fire Benitez.

> New England ride Twellman's bike to Washington
The New England Revolution are on their way to RFK for the MLS Cup finals next weekend after riding Taylor Twellman's breathtaking bicycle kick goal to a 1-0 victory of the Chicago fire in Boston last night. It is the fourth time in six years New England will be in an MLS Cup final, but they're still searching for the first Championship. They will play the winer of Kansas City and Houston, who play the other semi-final on Saturday in Houston. A Houston win would set up the first back-to-back rematch of an MLS Cup final in league history.

---- Editor's Corner ----

MLS v Europe: My old teammate Danny Murphy is up to his column writing again for Yanks-abroad. This time, he takes a good look at the real differences between MLS and European teams, and it's not what you might think.

More Hispanic Players Wanted: Dominion High School is leading the way in getting Hispanic students more involved in organized sports. Their intramural program is a far-reaching success, and acts as a model as other schools come calling for advice. Check out this long piece by Stephen Norris in the Washington Post.

Referee Diaries: The saying goes, "A good referee is one that is hardly noticed." So naturally, I say "so, why do they wear those bright yellow shirts?" Seriously, have you ever wondered what a pre/during/post game routine is like for a professional referee? Check out this diary of Baldomero Toledo, one of U.S. Soccer's full-time referees, on a recent day in Chicago as the Referee of the first Chicago and D.C. playoff match.
