> United drop first leg of series to Fire

> Wilmer Cabrera named Head Coach of U.S. Under-17 Men's National Team
U.S. Soccer President Sunil Gulati has named Wilmer Cabrera, a two-time World Cup veteran from Colombia, as head coach of the U.S. Under-17 Men's National Team. Cabrera, 40, will oversee U.S. Soccer's U-17 Residency Program from Bradenton, Fla., where 40 of the country's elite players reside year-round and train in a professional environment to help them develop and become talented players that climb the ladder in the men's national program. The move backs up Gulati's early claims that he intends to bring more of a Latin American influence into U.S. Soccer's youth development plans.

> Hackworth named National Team Assistant Coach after losing U-17 post
Longtime U.S. Soccer Youth National Team coach John Hackworth has been named as an assistant coach to Bob Bradley and the U.S. Men's National Team. The move comes one month before the USA's final game of 2007 on Nov. 17 against South Africa in Johannesberg. In addition to joining the national team staff, Hackworth will also serve as the Development Academy Director in U.S. Soccer's new player development initiative that launched earlier this year.

> New scorers lead Men's Soccer past Georgetown, 2-1
Maryland Senior Aki Kadotani scored his first goal in over two years and freshman Sean Flatley scored his first collegiate goal as the Maryland men's soccer team defeated Georgetown, 2-1, on Tuesday at Ludwig Field in College Park, MD. Senior Stephen King scared the Georgetown defense all night, setting up both scores on track to tying his career high in season assists. It was the 27th time that the Terrapins and Hoyas had met on the pitch and it was the 27th time that the result went to Maryland. The win also improves Maryland's unbeaten streak to seven games as it is 4-0-3 in its current nine-game homestand. The Terps (7-4-4) return to action tonight when they host NC State at 8:00 p.m. at Ludwig Field.

> MLS elaborates on expansion plans
MLS has already announced the addition of the San Jose Earthquakes, who will become the league's 14th team next season. Seattle is expected to be awarded the 15th franchise and would begin play in 2009, along with a potential Eastern Conference team. Neither of those teams has been confirmed and, in the statement, the league said it plans to expand to 16 teams before the 2010 season. An announcement could be made as early as the MLS Cup, which will be played Nov. 18 at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C.

> D.C. United and Richmond Kickers in Second 11 overall club ranking for Super-Y
United Soccer Leagues announced Thursday the preliminary Super Y-League First and Second 11 Club rankings for the 2007 season, recognizing the league's top competitive and administrative clubs. The release of the list precedes the upcoming SYL North American Finals, where 21 of the clubs in the rankings will be competing for the 10 championships up for grabs November 16-20. The Super Y-League launched a new club ranking system in 2005 with the top clubs ranked from 1-22 and separated into the First and Second 11. Also released were boys and girls club rankings, which featured other area clubs Washington Freedom, Northern Virginia, and Richmond Strikers.

> Adu sees more Champions League minutes for Benfica in Celtic win
Freddy Adu has never lost to Celtic. The 1-0 defeat to Freddy's Benfica was a bit more important than their 4-0 loss to D.C. United two summers ago. The reigning Scottish Champion's dismal away record in the Champions League was extended with a late Oscar Cardozo goal on a play started by Freddy Adu in Lisbon. Adu entered the match for new club Benfica in the 2nd half, and changed the pace of the game. He also became the youngest American ever to compete in the group states of the Champions League, beating our Jonathan Spector's previous record.

---- Boasts ----

Eric Wootten from Old Bridge Estates was invited to the 2008 US Club Soccer Super Y League ODP National Camp Jan 10-13, 2008. Last year at the same camp, Eric was selected from 188 players as one of 22 players on the Super Y League ODP National Select team (1991 age group).

Hokie junior midfielder Scott Dillie came off the bench and scored his second goal of the season as the No. 4 Virginia Tech men's soccer team extended its school record unbeaten streak to 13 matches with a 1-1 tie at No. 24 Duke on Tuesday night in Koskinen Stadium.

The Richmond Kickers US Soccer Development Academy Teams swept Virginia Rush at First Market Stadium, on the campus of the University of Richmond, last weekend.  The U-16 boys topped Virginia Rush, 1-0, on a goal from Ian Major with just five minutes remaining.  Meanwhile, the U-18 boys fell behind in the 9th minute but retaliated with two goals each by Patrick Innes and Jack Baxter to down Rush 4-1.

The third time was the charm for sweeper Chris Myers and the Severna Park seniors as they upset No. 2 Broadneck, 3-2, Wednesday night, to win the Anne Arundel County boys soccer championship at Chesapeake High. It was the first county championship for the Falcons (12-3) since 1998, when they nipped Chesapeake, 2-1, and their third overall.

Fallston's Eric Croucher scored with 16 minutes left in the second half to lift the Cougars (10-3-1) to their second straight Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference title and third in four years. Final score was Fallston 1, Aberdeen 0.

Samantha Novy's goal in the 69th minute proved to be the game-winner at Chesapeake High as the Severna Park Falcons won the Anne Arundel County championship for the third consecutive year and ninth overall with a score of No. 4 Severna Park 2, No. 12 Arundel 1.

The Fallston Cougars girls (13-0-1) captured their first UCBAC championship in dominating fashion against Harford Tech with four goals in the final 17 minutes of the first half to take control in steady rain at Edgewood High. Final score was No. 6 Fallston 5, Harford Tech 0.

The River Hill girls soccer team got three goals from junior Brittany Yancey and timely saves from sophomore goalkeeper Carylynne Hudson but still needed a late-game hero, senior Erica Suter, to clinch a 4-3 win against No. 7 Centennial for the Howard County championship on Wednesday.

Junior Moni Sallam headed home a cross from junior Mike Doyle with 9:03 left in the first half, and the host No. 6 River Hill defense protected the lead with tight marking and a key late save from senior goalkeeper Pat Hudson to secure the Howard County title with a 1-0 victory against No. 14 Oakland Mills.

Sabrina Mullaney, Institute of Notre Dame, has been named soccer high school girls Athlete of the Week. Scoring 15 goals and making three assists this season, the senior forward has shown a knack for being at the right place at the right time for the No. 8 Indians.

Amelia Doyle, a 2007 graduate of Smithsburg High School and starter on the varsity soccer team, which won the girls' 1A State Championship two years in a row, was one of three Washington County, Md. students to receive a scholarship award from the Hagerstown Lioness Club recently.

UMBC freshman fullback Chris Williams (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) was named America East Conference Men's Soccer Rookie of the Week for the week ending Oct. 20.

Towson Senior goalkeeper Billy Chiles (Springbrook H.S./Silver Spring, Md.) of the Tigers has been named as the Colonial Athletic Association men's soccer Co-Player of the Week ending October 21.

James Madison men's soccer player CJ Sapong (Manassas, Va./Forest Park) was named Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the week Monday.

The Richmond Kickers Elite U15 Boys have made their way into the Virginia State Cup Semi Final to be played this coming Saturday, October 27, 2007 at the Warhill Sports Complex in Williamsburg, Virginia. They will meet the McLean MPS Hurricanes, current State Champions.

---- Editor's Corner ----

Parents of youth soccer players, don't read this! You might just start to think twice about how much you allow your kids to play soccer, and the next thing you know your kid's dreams will be ruined because they only got to play 100 games next year instead of 112. Seriously though, this stuff is the real deal. At what point is enough enough? Popping pain pills, playing hurt, tearing ligaments that might jeopardize playing ANY sport competitively in the future? If anyone wants to make another serious push to move VA High School soccer to Falls, you will have the full support of this publication. Getting these two seasons in sync would allow youth teams to take sit outs more easily, and reduce the conflict of interest that exists between High School and Club. For many, High School soccer is the highest, most rewarding level they'll ever play. But for those who have dreams far beyond this, you need to read this article, and think really hard about how playing too much might actually hurt your long term goals.

Video: Is this truly "perfect football"? Ok, I might be a little bit of an Arsenal fan, but nothing too fanatical. I support Fulham, Reading, Derby, Rangers, etc., basically any team that features American Internationals. But of the "super teams," Arsenal is where I hang my hat. As a coach, I often discuss with my players how the truly perfect game of soccer would be played with a team in 100% of possession, with the ball never having to leave the ground. Impossible, yes, but something to reach for. In Arsenal's 7-0 demolition of Prague on Tuesday, you rarely see the ball leave the ground, nor a play take more than 3 touches. The results are astonishing and should be held as a shining example of how easy this game can be when a skilled team works together.

The delicate difference between men's and women's soccer in the USA. Andrea Canales filed a very thought provoking piece on the issues surrounding how the U.S. Men's and Women's National Team programs are treated differently. All inspired of course by the announcement that Greg Ryan's contract will not be renewed [read: Fired].

And on the subject, here's something more to the point on the current state of our women's team by Christine Brennan of USA Today.
