> Eddie Pope about to hang up very large boots Former United and World Cup star Eddie Pope's long MLS career comes to a close. An MLS original, Pope was drafted by Arena on the second round of the inaugural college draft when he directed D.C. United in the early days of MLS in 1996. The 6-foot-1, 180-lb Pope leaves very large boots to fill for MLS. He was a member of the U.S. national team from 1996 to 2006, making 82 international appearances and performing in three FIFA World Cups (1998, 2002 and 2006). He also was voted to 11 MLS All-Star Games, the league's Defender of the Year in 1997 and to the MLS All-Time Best XI when the league celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2005. [full story +]
> U.S. men finally win in Europe, both Edu and Adu play a part
The U.S. Men's National Team defeated Switzerland 1-0 behind a late goal from midfielder Michael Bradley on a rainy evening in front of 16,500 fans at St. Jakob Park in Basel, Switzerland. The victory was the first for the U.S. in Europe in six games, improving the team's record to 3-5-2 in their last 10 matches on European soil. The victory also ended the team's five-game losing streak in all games. Next up, the U.S. will make their first-ever trip to South Africa when they take on the 2010 FIFA World Cup hosts on Saturday, Nov. 17 as part of the Nelson Mandela Challenge Cup. [ full story +]

> The State of Maryland comes courting in D.C. United's stadium searchA leading Maryland official began a public push this week to lure D.C. United, calling on the state to find a site for a new soccer stadium. The announcement prompted District government leaders in Washington to say they will fight to keep the team in the city. In a letter to Maryland Stadium Authority Chairman Frederick W. Puddester, Comptroller Peter Franchot said United's negotiations with D.C. Mayor Adrian M. Fenty (D) to build a 27,000-seat stadium in the city have stalled. But several D.C. Council members, including Chairman Vincent C. Gray (D), also met with United officials and pledged to work with the franchise to find a new home in the District. [ full story +]

> U.S. WNT gets win over Mexico in Portland
The U.S. Women's National Team battled the weather, a rock hard field and a feisty Mexican team to score three second half goals on the way to a 4-0 victory at PGE Park. U.S. Captain Kristine Lilly scored in stoppage time of the first half and Abby Wambach, Natasha Kai and Carli Lloyd added late goals as the USA's upped its record in 2007 to 19-1-3 with one match left this year. That will come this Saturday, Oct. 20, at University Stadium in Albuquerque, N.M., as the USA faces Mexico to end this three-match series against its southern neighbor.

---- Boasts ----
Sophomore Jonathan Villanueva capitalized on two Cavalier set pieces Oct. 16 to give the Virginia men's soccer team an early 2-0 lead against Florida Atlantic. Amidst a flurry of 24 fouls and a red card, Matt Ayotte then scored twice for Virginia as he knocked in a through ball and then capitalized on a fast break to give the Cavaliers their third and fourth goals of the game.
Freshman Rodney Wallace scored twice as the Maryland men's soccer team beat Villanova, 4-0, on October 16 at Ludwig Field. Junior Graham Zusi assisted on both of his goals while sophomore Jeremy Hall recorded a goal and an assist in the victory. Sophomore Drew Yates added a goal in the win while junior Michael Marchiano notched his first career point, an assist off of a corner kick that Yates cleaned up. Maryland extended its unbeaten streak to five games and is 3-0-2 during its current homestand.
Georgetown University freshmen Chandler Diggs scored the game-winning overtime goal with 4:05 to go in the first OT session to lift the Hoyas to a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over cross town-rival American University on Wednesday on North Kehoe Field. GU improves to 4-9-0 on the year.
The Loyola men's soccer team (11-2, 4-0 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) defeated Iona 1-0 last Sunday at Diane Geppi-Aikens Field for the Greyhounds' fifth straight win.
Kyle McHugh, born and raised in Baldwin, Md., a grad of the McDonogh School, and a senior at Princeton, almost singlehandedly defeated Columbia last Sunday to keep the Tigers' Ivy League hopes alive.
Senior Terps midfielder Stephen King was named one of 10 finalists for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award, presented annually in eight NCAA sports to a senior student-athlete who excels both on and off the field. This is the first time that this award will be given in soccer. You can vote once a day for King at seniorclassaward.com.
---- Notes ----
FC Virginia has added current D.C. United Assistant Mark Simpson
to their club training staff. Coach Simpson's duties with United will
not change, but he will be spending available evenings training FCV
teams and goalkeepers, and will also be available to assist with
affiliated clubs of FCV such as Chantilly Soccer Club and Fairfax
Police Youth Club.
The first U.S. Soccer Development Academy Fall Showcase Weekend is in
the history books. Thirty-eight high-level matches were played over the
span of three days involving more than 700 players representing 38 of
the nation's best youth teams. The showcase matches are the second
weekend of a nine-month campaign in which 124 teams will compete in
over 1,800 matches in conference play. Here's the wrap-up.
The Virginia Sports Hall of Fame, in Portsmouth, is seeking nominations from across Hampton Roads for the 2007 Hall of Fame Student-Athlete Achievement Awards. Application deadline is Nov. 2 at 5 p.m.
The SAM soccer class schedule and online registration for the winter Pre-Kicks (3-5 yrs) and Kickers (6-8 yr old) classes is open.
After selling out their first three 2008 Winter clinics in less than one week, the Washington Freedom have added two more clinic sessions Jan - Feb.
Applications are open for Richmond Kickers 2008 Colonial Cup, May 24-25, 2008. Deadline for applications is April 18, 2008.
The members of Mid-County Soccer Association and the Manassas Area
Soccer Association/Manassas Area Travel voted to proceed with the
merger of the two clubs into a single Northern Virginia Soccer Club
(NVSC). Now, they've launched a new website to reflect the merger.
Less than two weeks remain to apply for US Club Soccer's Youth World Series event in Lancaster, Pa. on Nov. 23-25. Applications are due on Friday, Oct. 26.
The application deadline for the inaugural Washington Cup is Friday, Oct. 26.

Copa DC: The 7th annual Copa DC VII is filling up fast. Only a few
spots are left for this adult men's indoor championship. First prize is
$3,000.00! Check out their registration form, or call Evan Rodger @ 202-587-5491.
Jessica Noon:
Catonsville High senior Jessica Nonn is a standout forward on the Lady
Comets soccer team. Despite scoring 55 career goals, including 17
through the No. 6 Comets' nine games this season, Nonn, a four-year
starter in soccer, basketball and lacrosse, earned an athletic
scholarship to Virginia Tech because of what she could do with a crosse
in her hand, not with a ball at her feet. But she has a perfect going
away present for Catonsville: the school's first state title in girls
soccer.
Blast off: As the Baltimore Blast prepare to begin their season tonight
against the defending champion Philadelphia Kixx, players will also be
getting ready for a season against a league with a new look. In its
seventh season, the Major Indoor Soccer League has added three new
teams in Monterrey (Mexico), Newark, N.J., and Orlando, Fla. After
failing to qualify for last year's playoffs, the Blast are looking to
bounce back. MISL-leading goalkeeper Sagu returns, along with fellow
veterans David Bascome, Denison Cabral and Machel Millwood. The Blast
also signed former Maryland Terrapin Scott Buete before the start of
the season. Check out the season preview, and be sure to head out to the match tonight!
Ben Olsen: Ben Olsen will play in his 200th league game in United's
regular-season finale against Columbus tomorrow at RFK. John Hayden of
the Washington Times put together a nice piece
on this dynamic, right-brained, beard-loving, Pennsylvania Dutch Boy
who just happened to be good at kicking a soccer ball and leading grown
men.
Strikers Interview: With the first US Academy Development League Fall
Showcase out of the way, three Richmond Strikers Academy players sat
down with Matt Kirkpatrick for an interview on their experience.
D.C. United Stadium: Following the D.C. United stadium saga? While I'd
rather the deal be done and construction under way, it's certainly nice
to get some serious public debate and attention. The whole Nationals
Stadium deal barely addressed United's situation, even though the
public money committed there could have built nearly 4 new stadiums for
United. The team has posted a FAQ page on their web site which clearly
spells out their position on many issues. Check it out, then sign the petition. There's also a public hearing
tomorrow in Anacostia hosted by a D.C. Council Member specifically on
the topic of Poplar Point development. You have to apply in advance to
be a public questioner, but that's an easy process. Call John Adams at
202-727-6683.
