> United draw clinches first on Saturday, then Supporters Shield on Sunday
D.C. United clinched first place in MLS's Eastern Conference Saturday night with a 0-0 tie against the Chicago Fire, but you hardly would have known it from the club's reaction. No champagne bottles, no cigars, barely an acknowledgment that it had secured home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. What they really wanted was the Supporters Shield, and thanks to a loss by Chivas USA Sunday, Saturday's draw in front of over 25,000 was enough.

> D.C. United clinch 2007 Supporters' Shield
On the heels of Chivas USA's loss to the Colorado Rapids on Sunday evening, D.C. United has claimed the 2007 Supporters Shield, the title given to the Major League Soccer team with the best regular season record. The distinction also qualifies United for next spring's CONCACAF Champions Cup, guaranteeing more international games and an early start to next season. The club's fourth Supporters' Shield crown becomes the 11th major domestic or international title in club history.

In its first match since the 2007 FIFA Women's World Cup, the U.S. Women's National Team let in an early goal, but stormed back to score five unanswered in a 5-1 victory over Mexico. Abby Wambach scored twice in the second half while Heather O'Reilly, Kristine Lilly and Carli Lloyd also added scores. The match, in front of more than 10,000, marked the first-ever soccer game in the Edward Jones Dome and the first of three matches against Mexico for the U.S. Women to end the year.

> Hope Solo issues official public apology, chooses to sit out

In addition to a general apology to all fans and teammates, she made a special apology to Coach Greg Ryan and Brianna Scurry, and expressed regret that such a public statement did not come sooner.

---- Boasts ----

Barza F.C. recently had a great Calverton Columbus Challenge Tournament. Entering 6 teams and finishing with 2 Champions and 2 2nd places.  Their teams U-10 Barza Campeones and U-13 Barza Galactico came out Champions and the U-11 Barza Estrellas and U-14 Barza Selecto came out on 2nd place after many well played games against top competition.

The Virginia Tech women's soccer team trounced NC State, 4-1, in the Hokies' first ACC win of the season Sunday afternoon at Method Road. The Fox Soccer Channel will broadcast the next game (Hokies v No.3 Virginia) on Thursday at 8 pm, marking the first time that the Hokies' women's soccer team has been on national television.

Freshman goalkeeper Yewande Balogun (Bowie, Md.) made a career-best nine saves, but in the end it wasn't enough to prevent the Miami Hurricanes from handing the University of Maryland women's soccer team a 1-0 loss Sunday afternoon at Cobb Stadium. The loss drops the Terps' record to 5-6-2 on the season, 0-5-0 in the ACC.

Four former Maryland men's soccer players have been placed on the USMNT roster for its match against Switzerland on October 17; Dan Califf, Maurice Edu, Chris Seitz, and Taylor Twellman.

Christopher Newport's women's soccer team posted its second straight shutout in a 5-0 win over USA South rival Ferrum Sunday afternoon. CNU improves to 9-5 on the year and 6-0 in conference play.

With Tuesday's 1-0 overtime win over Damascus, the Rockville Rams' girls' soccer team (7-1-1, 4-0-1) claimed the Montgomery County 3A/2A/1A West Division title.

The Good Counsel Falcons' sixth-ranked girls' soccer team earned a split of the season series with No. 5 O'Connell with Tuesday's 1-0 win, which was shortened because of lightning. Lauren Kelly scored in the 52nd minute and the game was called in the 58th. With just three weeks left before the start of the WCAC tournament, second-ranked St. John's, O'Connell and Good Counsel are all in contention for the league title.

After winning just five games last season, the Gaithersburg Trojans' boys' soccer team ran its record to 7-2 with a 3-0 victory over Blair on Tuesday night. Gaithersburg got goals from Andrew Roberts, Norman Castro and Ryan Bercaw.

---- Editor's Corner ----

If you want a new Stadium for D.C. United, please sign this petition today.

USA v Switzerland: The U.S. Men's "Olympic" teams packed up training camp in Yverdon-les-Bains Monday and headed out to Basel for Wednesday's match up with the Euro 2008 co-hosts. I say Olympic because Coach Bob Bradley has several young players in the squad that will likely form the nucleus of next year's Olympic team. This despite the Americans being on a 5-game losing streak, and facing a strong European squad. Where will you watch the match Wednesday at 2:30?

Pro Indoor: Clemente Lisi asks if professional indoor soccer can survive on the eve of a new MISL season. Two quick questions - where do the Ironmen play, and who is their goalkeeper? If you already knew this, apparently you're one in a million. Note the concern that the league let some historic franchises fizzle over the years, but the Baltimore Blast are still here and worth the price of admission.

Pick up games: Sam Snow - U.S. Youth Soccer's Director of Coaching Education - wrote an article about pick up soccer that I LOVE. I've personally been trying to organize pick up games (is that an oxymoron?) for the past three summers - but rarely get more than a few players from my own team to show. Just letting the kids play, without interference from adults is a huge part of the world's game that this country is missing out on. Coach Snow asks "There are millions of kids playing soccer in our country, so why do we not see pickup games at every turn?"
