> United considers stadium site outside D.C. D.C. United is looking at sites outside D.C. for its new stadium, according to a recent team letter, the strongest response yet to Mayor Adrian Fenty's decision to offer Poplar Point for competitive development. D.C. United, Major League Soccer's most successful franchise, has angled for a new stadium on Poplar Point for years. But the Fenty administration has offered no indication that it prefers a stadium for Poplar Point, and in the middle of the year it issued its request for interest to the development community - putting the project up for competition. > GotSoccer closes discussion forums after 11 years
Started 11 years ago when the Internet was in its infancy and when there were less then 35 youth soccer sites on the web, the GotSoccer forums were closed on Tuesday. According to their operator, the forums long outlived their usefulness, while a recent spate of distasteful posts on the Armchair Striker went far beyond the pale. The company also claims the closure will allow it to better concentrate on its core business. [ full story +] |

---- Boasts ----
Seven current and former W-League players are up for FIFA Women's World Player of the Year according to the list of 26 players announced as nominees for the honor by the world's governing body. Adjoa Bayor (Ghana), Daniela (Brazil), Formiga (Brazil), Kristine Lilly (USA), Christine Sinclair (Canada), Kelly Smith (England) and Abby Wambach (USA) are the seven W-League alumni vying for the seventh edition of the honor.
Jon Werth (University Park, Md.) became the second Holy Cross freshman to win rookie of the week honors in the last three weeks following his game-tying goal against Bucknell. Werth scored in the 62nd minute to push the game to extra sessions, eventually earning a point for the Crusaders in the League standings as a result.
Senior midfielder Pat Healey (Bel Air, Md.) contributed a goal and four assists as Towson rolled to conference wins over Georgia State (6-0) and UNC Wilmington (4-1) last weekend. For the season, Healey is third in the CAA with 12 points on four goals and four assists.
Sophomore goalkeeper Matt Tengs (Springfield, Va.) was named USA South Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week after helping the Christopher Newport Captains to two shutouts and a 2-0 record last week.
Sophomore forward Meredith Hester (Reston, Va.) has been named USA South Women's Soccer Player of the Week. Hester scored four goals and added one assist for nine points in a 2-0 week for N.C. Wesleyan.
Freshman goalkeeper Shae Tharrington (Lynchburg, Va.) was named USA South Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week after filling in at goal due to an injury to help the Avenging Angels (Meredith) to a 1-1 record last week, picking up her first collegiate shutout in the process.
Since dropping their county opener to Mt. Hebron Sept. 18, the River Hill Hawks have posted four shutouts in the past five games, including
a recent 2-0 win over Long Reach Oct. 5, to improve its county record
to 5-1 and 6-4 overall. Coach Matt Shagogue puts a lot of it down to a
more direct style of play on offense, adopted in response to the
initial losses of the season. The stretch of shutouts has the team
controlling its own fate in order to qualify for the county
championship game Oct. 23.
---- Notes ---- VA State Cup schedules for Saturday, October 13 have changed due to
the Oct. 10 shutdown of Bull Run fields, which were deemed too dry for
play. If your team has a game scheduled at Bull Run on the 13th, please
look back at the schedule carefully for changes.
The first playoff game details for RFK have been announced by D.C. United to it's season ticket holders. The game date will be Thursday, November 1, at 7:30 p.m.

---- Editor's Corner ----
D.C. United's letter to Mayor Fenty has certainly created a buzz, but
reports are saying the City officials are not too concerned. There are
several stories today on this issue in area papers, as well as a link
to the actual letter, and a trancript of the team owner's media
conference at Washington Post offices Thursday: Letter from team to Mayor's office (it's a .pdf) Interview transcript from Soccer Insider Washington Post Metro section story Washington Examiner says Mayor's office isn't biting Washington Times story on subject If you want a new Stadium for D.C. United, please sign this petition today.
Ian Plenderleith of USSoccerPlayers.com says the latest US roster call
up is yet another sign MLS needs to change their season schedule. I
agree, but also understand that until we get a few more teams in total
control of their own stadiums that a major schedule change won't - or
can't - happen. The best we can hope for is a break during the 2010
World Cup. After that, all teams need their own stadiums, and
attendance needs to be strong enough to "weather" the cold in Boston
and Columbus if the season is played into December and starts in
March.
AC Milan's Brazilian goalkeeper Dida was suspended for two Champions League matches Thursday for pretending to be injured after being
touched by a Celtic fan who ran onto the field. The incident occurred
last week when the Scottish team beat Milan 2-1 in Glasgow. A fan ran
onto the field late in the 90th minute and made what appeared to be
minimal contact with Dida. The Milan goalkeeper then turned to chase
the fan before dropping to the ground. He was then carried off the
field on a stretcher and replaced. Just search the term "dida" on
YouTube for
several different angles of the incident. I am quite surprised however
that Celtic only received a minimal fine for the incident. Dida's
suspension was appropriate, but Celtic should have to pay a higher
price for their fan's conduct.
