---- Boasts ----
George Mason freshman midfielder Fro Adu has been named George Mason Male Athlete of the Month. He has started all seven matches the Patriots have played, leading the team in goals (3), points (6) and game-winning goals (2).
A pair of goals in the fifth minute by George Washington sophomores Erick Perez-Segnini (Montgomery Village, Md.) and Andy Stadler (Wauwatosa, WI) proved to be enough as the Colonials men's soccer team withstood a late Longwood rally for a 2-1 victory at Mount Vernon Field on Wednesday afternoon.
The Arundel High School girls soccer team proved its mettle with a 2-1 win over Annapolis on Tuesday. Sophomore striker Francisca Okoko netted two goals to lift the fourth-ranked Wildcats to the win.
VMI sophomores Jessica Robbins (Williamsburg,Va.) and Chrissy Beach (Las Vegas, NV) each netted hat tricks as VMI posted their highest offensive output in over two years to defeat Southern Virginia 9-0 in non-conference women's soccer action on Tuesday afternoon at Patchin Field.
In Virginia State Cup play, the SOCA U17 boys beat the Stafford Azzuri, 4-0, the U15 boys beat Chesterfield, 9-0, the U16 girls beat Richmond Kickers South, 13-0, and the U16 girls beat Virginia Legacy, 5-3.
Christopher Newport's men's soccer squad won its third straight match by shutting out USA South rival Shenandoah 6-0 Wednesday night. Shawn Trueblood (Williamsburg, Va.) scored twice for the Captains. Michael Caro (Alexandria, Va.) scored his 13th and 14th goals of the year and Brian Tweed (Springfield, Va.) and Andrew Carver (Loftsburg, Va.) each scored once for Christopher Newport.
Tuesday night in Richmond the Goochland Board of Supervisors voted unanimously in favor of the zoning ordinance allowing soccer fields at the West Creek Office Park. The ordinance will allow fields under a CUP (Certificate of Use Permit) which can be renewed after five years.
---- Notes ---- Yahoo Sports is reporting the US Men's team will face Sweden in California on January 19 during their winter camp, and in preparation for 2010 World Cup qualifying - which begins in early 2008 for the U.S. team. FIFA will hold the draw for qualifying rounds on November 25th in South Africa.
Gooch sees red in UEFA cup, fate of other Americans in cup also decided.
The Terrapin men's soccer team dominated Stony Brook thoroughly Tuesday night, but was unable to put the Seawolves away. Despite a 20-4 advantage in shots, the Terps left Ludwig Field with only a 1-1 tie to show for their efforts.
The Maryland men's soccer team will host its first ACC home game of the year tonight, Oct. 5 at 8:00 p.m. as Clemson visits Ludwig Field in a match televised by Fox Soccer Channel. A limited edition Maryland Under Armour game jersey signed by the entire Terps team will be raffled off at halftime.
The Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSAA) has announced changes to the sites of the 2007 MPSSAA boy's soccer and girl's soccer state finals. Changes were necessary due conflicts with NCAA events and site availability. The 2007 girl's soccer state finals will be held at Broadneck High School on Thursday, November 15 and Saturday, November 17. The 2007 boy's soccer state finals will be held on Saturday, November 17 at South River High School.

This is a good article on foxsoccer.com with a brief history of the growth of youth soccer, that growth's connection with professional players, and the new flood of foreign stars that might push youth ranks even higher. We've set up a poll on our web site. Please vote and add your opinion on the future growth (or lack there of?) in youth soccer.
Do you hate soccer? Probably not, or you wouldn't be reading this at all. Well, there are plenty of soccer haters out there nonetheless; and some of them have the gall to call themselves Sports Journalists. The Washington Post's Marc Fisher says he's not a hater - but he's sure not a fan. Last week he wrote an obituary for RFK Stadium after the Nationals baseball team played their final game there, and United fans took such offence that the newspaper had to shut down the comments section on his article, and he ended up publishing this long blog on Wednesday titled "Soccer Wars: Somebody Still Loves RFK". Enjoy the read, and send him your comments too.
With the very great possibility of D.C. United playing another MLS Cup final, thoughts have to drift to Eddie Pope's game winning, "golden goal" header that great rainy night in Boston in the first ever MLS Cup championship, and United's first of four. Pope is arguably the best Defender ever to play for either MLS or the Men's national team and it has been widely reported that he will retire after this regular season. Jack Bell of the New York Times filed a nice article on Eddie on Wednesday. Too bad we can't trade for him for the playoffs so he can officially finish his outstanding career in a proper uniform!
We found four nice soccer/human interest stories this week. Gotta love the writers focusing on soccer! Click these stories several times and send those emails to keep the soccer reporting coming!
Call her the annihilator, Radford University forward Brianna Kipper is using her tremendous kick well this season. It's stories like these that make me feel a lot better about still trying to play at a high level with 37-year old bones. (My wife - the world's greatest person to have ever lived - hates these types of articles for the very same reason).
