> Adu and U.S. Under-20s downed by Austria in extra time
One by one the U.S. players fell to the ground, exhausted, disappointed and stunned they had just been eliminated from the FIFA Under-20 World Cup. Entering the match as favorites, the USA allowed the match to get away from them, especially in the second half. They lost the lead and relied on goalkeeper Chris Seitz on too many occasions to keep them in the game in what turned into a 2-1 loss at the National Soccer Stadium in Canada, ending the U.S. run at a first finals appearance in any FIFA competition for a U.S. side. > U.S. Women defeat Norway, 1-0, in Connecticut
U.S. Women downed Norway for seventh straight time with three games left until China. The U.S. Women's National Team got a second half goal on a header from midfielder Carli Lloyd to edge long-time rival Norway, 1-0, in one of the toughest tests of the summer as the U.S. continues its run toward the 2007 FIFA Women's World Cup. A crowd of almost 10,000 saw the U.S. improve its record to 10-0-2 in 2007 with three games left in the team's Send-Off Series before leaving for China. [ full story +]

> Majestics near playoffs with 4-1 win over New York The Northern Virginia Majestics inched closer to clinching a playoff berth with a 4-1 win over the New York Magic at Gar-Field High School in Woodbridge, VA Saturday night. The victory keeps Northern Virginia in third place and retains a tenuous hold on the final Northeast Division playoff slot. The Majestics are now 7-5-1 and remain in a tight playoff race with both Boston (6-6-0) and Long Island (4-5-2) in the Northeast Division. The Majestics return home next week for their final regular season game on Saturday July 21st against the Jersey Sky Blue. [ full story +]
> Freedom cruise over New York 6-0, two away from winning Northeast The Washington Freedom outclassed the New York Magic 6-0 with an explosive offensive display. The Freedom wasted no time scoring two goals in less than a minute. The Freedom is in fine form heading into its final two games. Fred of D.C.United is one of the nominees for Sierra Mist Goal of the Week. Vote at www.mlsnet.com
A new MLS record of consecutive shutout (scoreless) minutes by the Houston Dynamo - D.C. United was unhappy to contribute 90 of those minutes last week in Houston. The previous record of 681 minutes had been set by Kansas City in 2000.
The U.S. loss at the Under-20 World Cup was really hard to take. Inconsistency was evident throughout the tournament, but on the whole, the U.S. looked capable - for the first time - of winning the tournament. The future looks promising though, if we achieve more depth and have Freddy, Jozy, and my tournament favorite Anthony Wallace come back on 2-years to lead us all the way. Sal Zizzo, Robbie Rogers, Michael Bradley, and Chris Seitz were also very impressive, but they'll all age out by the next tournament in 2009. I think we'll see some of these faces for the full men's side in the next camp however. Here are a couple stories on the U.S. loss, as well as overall tournament performance: ESPN: U.S. fails to reproduce best form against Austria US Soccer Players: Faulty defense behind young Americans' self-inflicted loss Jen Change Blog: U.S. U-20s: Post-tourney wrap Bobby McMahon Blog: FIFA Under-20 World Cup, Day 15 Austria 2-1 USA
