July 18 - July 20; the Women's Over-40 Northern Virginia Majestics and Women's Over-55 Virginia Vintage from the DC Metro area. The US Adult Soccer Association established the Veteran's Cup in 1998 to offer high-quality soccer for both men and women between 30 and over 60 years of age. About 120-140 adult soccer teams from all areas of the country will travel to the Tournament which is expecting over 4,400 people.
The Soccer Resorts Potomac Cup is in town again this weekend (including our Editor in uniform for RBIS Rampage). If you're in Loudoun County/Sterling area and not already attending to play, come out and watch. The games at all at Potomac Lakes Sports Complex on Paul Hencken Fields. ---- Editor's Corner ---- Beer for Bier on the way! Potomac Soccer Wire is throwing a fundraiser for Bier FC to help fund their trip to Seattle for the USASA Over-30 National Championships. The event will be at Ireland's Four Courts in Arlington on Wednesday, July 25th from 7PM till? There will be a cover, raffles, silent auctions, and hopefully several sponsors at the event, all to help cover the team's approximate $20,000 price tag to make the trip. We're collecting donations on behalf of the team for those who cannot attend in person. Please support local amateur soccer!
David Beckham is no longer coming - he's here. Since there's very little direct connection to our localized audience, and covering general professional and world soccer news is not our charter, we won't be filling up the wires with the entire goings on. There will be plenty of coverage out there on front pages, and I hope all the exposure will do nothing but help our sport. We'll cover Becks when it relates to United games, or other issues that touch our local community. We'll get you started with one great milestone - a Sports Illustrated cover story featuring an MLS player wearing their MLS team jersey for the first time. Plus, with Grant Wahl of SI recently moving to Baltimore, anything he writes qualifies to get in our publication too.
DC United, Houston Dynamo, and the LA Galaxy all lost their opening US Open Cup games to lower division teams in recent days, with two more games to go in the round. What's up with that? Well, the easy answer is the teams fielded primarily reserve players. But shouldn't reserves in MLS be better than starters in lower divisions? Check out my commentary on this in more detail in our forums. Follow the Open Cup at www.usopencup.com. Read more opinion about how MLS approaches the Cup on USSoccerplayers.com.
Recreation programs in Anne Arundel County are on the way to becoming the envy of every other county in the state. The announcement that the county will install what Recreation and Parks Department director Frank Marzucco calls safety turf - actually artificial turf - on each of the 12 public high school football stadiums, was enhanced by the information that recreation programs would get to use the facilities when the high school teams are not using them. BRAVO Anne Arundel County!
USSoccerPlayers.com has a lot of great opinion pieces worth taking a look at. I totally agree with this one regarding the lack of coverage for the US under-20 World Cup and how amazing Freddy Adu has played! If the US goes to the semi finals, I surely hope ESPN jumps on board full force. This is another chance to replicate the up-tick in exposure for soccer just like the Women winning in 1999. When that Cup started, few people outside the existing soccer circles even knew the tournaments was happening, but by the time it ended 40 Million people watched the finals at a packed Rose Bowl, and women's soccer was on the map once and hopefully for all. Let's hope we go all the way at this Cup, and let's hope ESPN goes all the way and helping everyone enjoy the ride!
