Beer for Bier on the way! Potomac Soccer Wire is throwing a fundraiser for Bier FC to help fund their trip to Seattle for the USASA Over-30 National Championships. The event will be at Ireland's Four Courts in Arlington on Wednesday, July 25th from 7PM till? There will be a cover, raffles, silent auctions, and hopefully several sponsors at the event, all to help cover the team's approximate $20,000 price tag to make the trip. USASA and local soccer associations have helped a bit, but the team is far below half the funds it really needs for the honor of representing our region. Stay tuned to this section for more, but MARK YOUR CALENDAR. Interested event sponsors, cash contributors, silent auction item donors, and celebrities willing to appear, please email editor@potomacsoccerwire.com and we'll put you in touch with the right people.
There was a sports cover piece on Beckham coming to MLS in the New York Times on Sunday. It's by Jere Longman, and starts off: "Whatever David Beckham is - soccer icon, husband of Posh Spice, global marketing brand, free-kicking metrosexual - he will not arrive in the United States this week as an intended savior."
Just a side note on weird things. United is playing their U.S. Open Cup game on Wednesday at MY old High School back in Lancaster, PA. (and of course I can't go). Ben Olsen could almost ride a bike to his boyhood home from there though - the place where soccer players in the 80's didn't know there was anything beyond the local high school leagues.
Anyone following FIFA's ban on high altitude games? It really doesn't make sense to try to ban those games, but not games below sea level and in 100% humidity - or games in Columbus, OH in February. It's called home field advantage people. Live with it. Well, they're backing down now - finally.
