On June 24 the Aegean Hawks defeated Danbury United 3-2 in OT to punch a ticket to USASA Nationals. The team will represent DC/VA in 2007 Region 1 tournament for both the USASA National Amateur Cup and the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup. The Hawks have gone 36-1-1 against amateur sides in the last year.
D.C. United's Jaime Moreno started for Bolivia in the Copa America tournament opener on Tuesday. The D.C. United Captain represented his country in an official competition for the first time in over seven years, and essentially scored Bolivia's first goal after some crafty work and a left-footed shot to the far post, but it was later ruled an own goal. The teams traded goals again later in the contest to finish 2-2.
In the Maryland qualifiers of the U.S. U23 Cup, the Baltimore Bays got off to a good start with a 2-0 victory over Columbia United. The next match in the qualifying group will take place on Wednesday, 27 June, 8:00 at Covenant Park, between United and Ambassadors FC.
---- Notes ---- Ten additional clubs have been selected to participate in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy bringing the total number to 21 clubs from across the country. Applications continue to come in and are under review with more decisions due in the coming weeks.
The Washington Freedom suffered its first defeat of the season at the hands of Jersey Sky Blue. The final score was a bit harsh on the Freedom, however, as they controlled much of the play for long spells and created numerous opportunities, but were unable to bounce back from the early 2-goal lead taken by the 'Jersey Girls'.
D.C. United has waived defender John Wilson. Wilson spent two-plus seasons with the Black-and-Red, after being signed by the team on May 27, 2005. Wilson had not made a single appearance with the first team this season and departs D.C. after two-plus years with the club.
D.C. United has already sold approximately 30,000 tickets to the LA Galaxy match expected to feature David Beckham, leaving only about 12,500 upper-deck seats. These tickets go on sale to the public Monday, unless you buy through a group like WAGS, NCSL, or your club first.
Christian Gomez of D.C.United is one of four nominees for the ESPY Awards in the category of Best MLS Player. The awards program will be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel and Lebron James on ESPN on July 15 at 9 p.m. ET. Vote at http://espn.go.com/espy2007/index.html#/vote/.
