> U.S. Tops Guatemala in Gold Cup Opener
Clint Dempsey's first-half goal gave the United States a 1-0 victory over Guatemala on Thursday in the opening round of the CONCACAF Gold Cup. The U.S. team has yet to lose this year, but often looked ragged against what should have been an overmatched opponent. Their next match is Saturday against Trinidad and Tobago. The defending champion Americans are seeking a fourth tournament victory in the Gold Cup, the championship of North and Central America and the Caribbean, and their third in the last four events. > England Always First-choice for Beckham
David Beckham's advisers insist the midfielder will allow no obstacle to stand in his way of playing for England when he moves to Los Angeles Galaxy. The 32-year-old looks to have secured his England squad place for the rest of the Euro 2008 qualifying campaign but that will mean clashes with some Galaxy fixtures. His match against United would not be affected, as England's first game after his arrival in MLS is a friendly against Germany on August 22. [ full story +]
> Virginia Legacy Win Late in Richmond

With the win, the Virginia Legacy improves to 4-3-0 as the Richmond Kickers Future drops 3-2-1. [ full story +]
> Jefferson Wins Virginia AAA Boys Quarterfinal on Coach's 'Lucky Field' When Jefferson's first defensive strategy didn't work against sixth-ranked Forest Park in Tuesday's Virginia AAA boys' soccer quarterfinal, Colonials Coach Sean Burke crossed his fingers and went to Plan B-superstition. Trusting the fates, not to mention his team's resiliency, worked and No. 10 Jefferson rallied for a 3-2 victory at Westfield High. They play Cox in a state semifinal scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday at Christopher Newport University in Newport News. [ full story +]
> Broad Run Girls Fall in PKs in State QuarterfinalsThe Broad Run High School girls soccer team, down a player the final 37 minutes of regulation, forced overtime Wednesday with a dramatic goal with 30 seconds left to tie the game 2-2. But then, the Spartans out-played Courtland in two overtimes only to lose the AA state quarterfinal, 3-1, in penalty kicks. [ full story +]
> Osbourn Park Jackets Ride Defense to SemifinalsIn Tuesday's AAA state quarterfinal at home against No. 9 Westfield, Jackets' Mike DiNuzzo and the defense again bailed out the offense in a 1-0 victory. While top-ranked Osbourn Park repeatedly missed on quality scoring chances, especially in the second half, the defense kept an undefeated season alive by extending its shutout streak to six games. Osbourn Park will play Cosby of suburban Richmond in the state semifinals Friday afternoon at Christopher Newport University in Newport News. [ full story +]

Unfortunately, the Board of Supervisors deferred their vote until their next meeting in July.

Jim Paglia is a nationally recognized brand strategist who lives outside Chicago. He has an extensive background in soccer ranging from the NASL, to NCAA Division I, to World Cup 1994, and 30 years of club administration and coaching.
