> U.S. Blows Past China in Friendly
In its last friendly before the start of the CONCACAF Gold Cup, the U.S. national team downed China 4-1 on Saturday at Spartan Stadium in San Jose, California. Though composed primarily of European-based players, with most of the MLS players in the U.S. team remaining with their clubs through this weekend's slate of matches, former Chivas USA and current U.S. head coach Bob Bradley brought in four of his former charges, taking advantage of his team's only open date this weekend.

> Eddie Johnson Scores First Back-to-Back Hat Trick in MLS History
Kansas City Wizards forward Eddie Johnson just etched his name in MLS history as the first person to record consecutive hat tricks. He struck for all three Kansas City goals as Curt Onalfo's soaring Wizards took down Red Bull New York by a 3-1 score Saturday. That came seven days after Johnson blistered New England's proud defense, striking for a hat trick in a surprising 4-3 road win at fortress Gillette.

---- Notes ----

The Broad Run Girls soccer team takes on Cortland High School in the AA State Quarterfinals Tuesday, June 5, at 7:00 PM at Broad Run High School. Dulles District and Regional champ Broad Run has scored over 100 goals this season and given up just one goal in six post-season games. Senior Brianna Smith (who is joined in the starting line up by sisters Kelly and Brenna) notched her 100 career goal earlier in the season, and seniors Jesse Cunningham and Kimmy Moss have been instrumental in the team's success, as have sophomores Caitlan Hunter (keeper), Holly King, Kelly Evans, Kat Hegidis, and Valerie Powell, and freshman Jenny Taylor.

The Washington Freedom begin their much anticipated 2007 home game schedule on Saturday, June 9th and Sunday, June 10th with back-to-back games at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Germantown. The Freedom are competing this summer in the W-League, the top women's league in the country, and every game counts as they vie for the W-League Championship.

The Virginia State Championship final games for the U12, U13 and U14 boys and girls, which were to be held this weekend in Virginia Beach at the Hampton Roads Soccer Complex, were rained out. They will be rescheduled at dates, times and venues to be determined by the State Cup Committee. The semi-finals WERE played and the results have been published.

The U.S. Under-18 Men's National Team won one match and lost two at the XIII Lisbon International Tournament in Lisbon, Portugal to take third place. The U.S. opened their campaign against Finland, falling 3-1.

The Richmond Kickers battled to a 2-2 draw in Western Mass, dropping a 2-0 halftime lead. Midfielder Sascha Goerres and defender Trevor McEachron teamed up on both Richmond goals in the 9th and 22nd minutes. The Kickers return to the University of Richmond Stadium next Saturday, June 9th to host the Wilmington Hammerheads at 7:00 p.m.

Four different players were on target for the Washington Freedom as they came back from a goal down to defeat the Northern Virginia Majestics 4-1 and it could have been more.

Crystal Palace Baltimore moved their unbeaten streak to three in front of their largest home crowd of the season by drawing with the New Hampshire Phantoms in a scoreless stalemate at Navy Marine Corps Stadium.

The Northern Virginia Royals were able to avenge the loss they picked up in West Virginia a week ago, beating the Chaos 2-0 at their home away from home, George Mason University's Robinson Field in front of 947 fans

Here are a couple of stories on United's unimpressive draw with L.A. on Saturday night.

United feel fortunate for draw in L.A., By Luis Bueno / MLSnet.com Staff
United and Galaxy finish goalless, By Luis Bueno / MLSnet.com Staff

Washington Post's Mike Wise wrote a really good piece on United Coach Tom Soehn. Wise characterized Soehn as the non-flashy, loyal, worker-bee that broke the mold by getting the nod for a top job without playing politics or being the flashy over-achieving self-promoting type that usually gets the glamour jobs in sports. (Wise also likens Peter Novak to Vlaimir Putin - even though he's Polish)
