> Baltimore Blast May Leave Town or Fold After Losing Home
Could the Baltimore Blast be the next professional sports franchise to leave Baltimore? With four championships, it's a scary thought, but how is a team to survive for two to five years without a home arena? That is the issue facing the local Major Indoor Soccer League franchise if its home facility - 1st Mariner Arena - is demolished in favor of a new facility in the current arena footprint.

---- Boasts ----

Hampton Roads' Andrew Wheeler of the Hampton Roads Piranhas has been named the USL Premier Development League Men's Player of the Week thanks to his four-goal outing against Northern Virginia Sunday.

D.C. United, one of the three finalists for the 2007 Turnkey PRISM Award in the Major League Category, received an Honorable Mention for the club's efforts in the area of Community Relations. This is the third consecutive year that United has been recognized as a finalist for the prestigious annual award while the Honorable Mention is the team's first.

Nike and US Club Soccer announced today the hiring of Gerry McKeown as id2 Director.  McKeown will direct and manage the scouting team, player nominations and player selections for the 2007 id2 program.

---- Notes ----

D.C. United to donate $3 from every ticket sold to the May 26th Houston Dynamo match to help recently devastated Eastern Market. A fire ravaged the historic building near RFK Stadium on April 30.

Maryland United FC will play their first official Premier Arena Soccer League game this weekend when they host DelCo Stars at Rockville Sports Plex in Rockville, Maryland. Kick off is at 2 PM.

Olney, Maryland's Oguchi Onyewu's contract not renewed by Newcastle in England.

The new look SoccerAmerica.com web site has new US National Team Head Coach Bob Bradley talking about Team-building, and comparing things to the 1980 US Hockey team. Will it be Russia vs. US in the World Cup Final in 2010?

Thanks to a generous donation from a friend close to the VMI soccer program, new Olympic-style goals and covered benches are the newest additions to Patchin Field. Approximately $17,000 was given to the program for these new amenities, and is the first step in improvements to the soccer playing field. See pictures here.

The third annual Prince William Soccer Travel Select Forum is set for Thursday May 24th, at 8 p.m. in the Christ Chapel Church Gym (across from Gar-Field High School).  We will be handing out tryout schedules, the annual club calendar, and 2007-2008 coaching slate.  The impact of being a Nike Premier Club will also be discussed.  All those interested in attending are invited.

After another bye week for United, it feels like forever since our first win of the season on May 6th. Here are a couple links to preview stories/opinions about the trip to the Great Red North on Saturday. Watch the match on Comcast Sports Net or Ireland's Four Courts in Arlington.

Speaking of Toronto, have you seen video from their official home opener against the Fire? If BMO had a roof over the stands to keep the noise in, you'd swear it was a match being played in London (less the organized songs of course... that will take a couple more years). Maryland's Edu gets his first professional goal as well. Click here , then and click on the 'video highlights' link for the May 2 Fire @ Toronto match. Ian Plenderleith also has an article about the fans up there.

Fifa.com has Freddy on their home page claiming the US-20's could do something BIG at this summer's U-20 World Cup. I have to say I agree. For the first time, our U-20 starting 11 is made up almost entirely of experienced professional players. Adu will be the Captain and says this the most talented group yet - and he should know, this is his 3rd U-20 World Cup (and he's STILL the youngest player on the team).
