> Bradley to be Named as US Coach

U.S. Soccer will announce Bob Bradley's permanent appointment as U.S. national team coach at a press conference in New York on Wednesday. The Washington Post's Steven Goff was first to this story, with follow up by others.

> McLean Freedom Win Region 1 Premier League, Qualify for Regionals
After winning the U-12 thru U-15 Virginia State Cup, the team faltered this year by losing to Chantilly's FC Virginia NetForce in the State Finals. This left winning the Region I Premier League title as their only chance qualifying once again for the US Youth Soccer Regionals. On Sunday they did just that, defeating the Stars of Massachusetts in the Final by a score of 3-2 and advancing to Region 1 Championships in Maine to be held June 28th thru July 3rd, 2007.

---- Boasts ----

Andrew Wheeler of new Hampton Roads PDL Piranhas scored all four goals in his team's defeat of the Northern Virginia Royals, closing Sunday's twin bill at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex in impressive fashion. This was the 2nd win in three days for Hampton Roads after they defeated West Virginia in a rain shortened affair on Friday night.

Stephen H. Baumann has been named President and Chief Operating Officer of the Soccer Hall of Fame. Mr. Baumann has had a broad-based career in non-profit management and received his M.S. in Science Education from the University of Virginia. He taught in the Fairfax County Public Schools and coached club soccer in northern Virginia for ten years. He was also an adjunct instructor at George Mason University.

The 2007 University of Miami women's soccer recruiting class is ranked 21st in nation in the annual poll by Soccer Buzz. It marks the third time that the Hurricanes have fielded a nationally-recognized signing class as the program embarks on just its 10th season. The talented field of newcomers includes two from our area; defender Lauren Kaiser from Alexandria, Va. and midfielder Leigh Van Lear from Burke, Va.

The 2007 Villanova women's soccer recruiting class has been ranked No. 25 in the entire nation by Soccer Buzz Magazine. The Wildcats will have six players joining the team for the coming season, including goal keeper Chante Sandiford of Owings Mills, Md. and the McDonogh School. Sandiford was second team all-state and All-Metro selection, scoring 66 goals during her high school career. Head coach Ann Clifton says she is looking forward to Sandiford's development under the tutelage of the GK coach and that the player has a good chance to make the U-17 national team.

---- Notes ----

With one regular season game left in her high school career, Broad Run senior forward Brianna Smith needs nine goals to reach 100. To reach 100 goals, Smith probably would need to advance to the AA state tournament. She has led Broad Run (13-2, 12-1) to two state tournament appearances and a 61-10-9 record in her four seasons. She owns the school's career scoring record, boys or girls and has had 17 goals and eight assists this season.

The Screaming Eagles invite men and women who are at least 18 yrs old to join their weekly pick up game at 9:00 am on Saturdays. All skill levels are welcome and it is open to members and non-members. They are currently playing at Lee H.S. on Frontier Drive and Franconia Rd in Springfield, VA.

The May 19th Spring 2007 Virginia State Cup schedule are online and include the last preliminary games for the U13 Girls and Boys.

Schedules are out for the Virginian soccer tournament.

Aegean Hawks FC lost 2-1 in double overtime to Maryland's AC United in the Region 1 Round of 16 in the US Amateur Cup. This is a different competition than the US Open Cup, which coincidentally will pitch these same two teams on May 20th in the Region 1 Semi-finals. That game will be at Yorktown High School in Arlington and kicks off at 7:15 PM. Follow all Region I adult soccer action at www.usasaregion1.com

Instead of going to a beach somewhere to hang out with friends on Spring Break, Jacob Weitz, a senior George Mason men's soccer player has attended the United Way's Alternative Spring Break (ASB) in Louisiana for the past two years. The ASB provides a way for college students to travel to the hurricane stricken areas of Louisiana to help rebuild communities. Weitz is a 2003 grad of Loudon Valley HS, played with the Winchester Fury club, and was selected to the Virginia State ODP team in 2001 and 2002. Learn more at

Another Soccer-themed movie has opened in the DC area. "Offside" is now playing at the Landmark E-Street Cinema in Washington. Inspired by the day when his own daughter was refused entry to a soccer stadium in Iran, Jafar Panahi's OFFSIDE follows a day in the life of a group of Iranian girls attempting to watch their team's World Cup qualifying match against Bahrain at the stadium in Tehran.

David Jacobson of Soccer America talks about filling a player's 'emotional tank', a coaching practice used by yours truly for my U12 girls WAGS team. The sports and educational psychology that underlies Positive Coaching indicates that a full tank generally results from a ratio of five specific, truthful praises to one constructive, specific criticism. That may seem like a lot of happy talk, especially for coaches who focus on correcting weaknesses and tearing down player egos in the name of "team-building." But Filling Emotional Tanks works. If your son or daughter is on a team where they're benched for making a mistake, and constantly being told what they're doing wrong as a coaching "technique", get them off that team TODAY. Winning youth club soccer games has almost nothing to do with whether or not a player will love and play the game for life, but draining their tank with a negative approach to coaching in an attempted to win will make it far more likely they won't love the game and not play past high school - if they make it that far.
