D.C. United announced its Virginia Tech tribute auctions raised $20,570 for the Hokie Spirit Memorial Fund. The club sold, to the highest on-line bidders, maroon memorial jerseys worn by those on the 18-man roster in United's April 28 match at the Columbus Crew. The limited edition kits include a VT memorial ribbon on the left sleeve and are signed by the individual players. Jaime Moreno's shirt fetched the highest amount at $1,340.

Baltimore Blast President and General Manager Kevin Healey will be inducted into the Old Timers Soccer Association of Maryland Soccer Hall of Fame on May 11. In addition to his duties with the Blast, Healey is the President of the Baltimore Bays and was a member of the 1976 Loyola College's NCAA Division II National Championship. In his nine seasons as General Manager of the Blast, the team has won three MISL Championships and advanced to the MISL Semifinals five times.

On Tuesday, Joe Speca, a Highlandtown native, was inducted into the Maryland State Athletic Hall of Fame for his illustrious soccer career. He has already been inducted into the Old-Timer's Soccer Hall of Fame and now is hoping to be tapped for the National Soccer Hall of Fame in Oneonta, N.Y. Speca was a member of the 1959 U.S. National Team that upset Brazil, 5-3, for the nation's first medal in the sport - a bronze in the Pan-American Games.

Karlin Hirschfeld, a sophomore at Towson University, has played competitive soccer since the age of 5, but this summer will be a whole new experience for him. Hirschfeld, who is 80 to 90 percent deaf, recently made the U.S. Deaf National Soccer Team and will join them in their upcoming United Kingdom Tour beginning July 20. Hirschfeld played high school soccer at James Hubert Blake High School in Silver Spring and currently plays club soccer at Towson, but has done so with the benefit of a bone conduction hearing aid which allows him to hear normally.

United Soccer Leagues is pleased to announce the addition of Jeff McRaney to the full-time staff as Senior Director of Youth Development. He will be responsible for providing oversight to the operational management of the Super Y-League and Super-20 League and for providing quality assurance for all clubs under those two leagues. McRaney has served as a Manager for the US U17 National Team's Residency Program where he implemented the US National Team Residency Program in 1999. The program has since produced the most prolific soccer talent ever to emerge from the US.

---- Notes ----

Make sure your goals are anchored! The Old Dominion Soccer League is mourning the loss of one of its U11 players. Hayden Barnes Ellias, 10, of Stephens City, Virginia, passed away on Monday, May 7, 2007 in Winchester, Virginia, as a result of a soccer injury. He was a member of Winchester United Soccer and a 4th grade student at Bass - Hoover Elementary School in Stephens City, Virginia.

As part of a commitment to get kids moving and improve their lives through sport, Nike and the U.S. Soccer Foundation will celebrate the opening of a world-class FieldTurf mini soccer field. Freddy Adu is scheduled to appear at the dedication today, Friday, May 11th in Anacostia at 4pm. The event will include a brief series of speakers - including the President of the US Soccer Foundation - a ceremonial first goal, and an hour or so of skills clinics & free play for about 100 Boys & Girls Club kids. The field is at 620 Milwaukee Place, SE.

Head coach Brian Pensky has released the women's soccer schedule for the 2007 season. The Terps will go against nine teams that competed in last season's NCAA championships, including 2006 national champion North Carolina.

The Virginia Tech men's soccer team is set to embark upon a 12-day tour of Germany May 9-20 that will include four exhibition matches between the Hokies and various club teams. A group of 16 players, three coaches and one trainer will be making the trip to head coach Oliver Weiss' native country, where he was born in Hannover and raised in Burgdorf.

Elkridge (MD) Youth Organization announced that online registration for Fall Soccer is now open with an early bird discount.

Each day of the course, the focus is upon one of the traditional soccer age groups of U6, U8, U10 or U12.

Freddy Adu is OK after he was hit in the head with a golf ball while playing a round with teammates earlier this week. Apparently it wasn't much of a clunk. There was no goose egg and he practiced fully after the incident.

Want to own 1:50,000th of an English football (soccer) club? There's a cool web site being run over in England trying to get 50,000 members to sign up with a promise to pay about $70 once they get the full 50,000. They'll use the funds to buy a club, and then the 50,000 "owners" all vote on major club issues and player contracts/transfers. Maybe we should start something like this here and start a USL team?

The publication of every salary in Major League Soccer by the Players' Union not only spilled the beans on how many millions David Beckham and his fellow foreign imports will be earning, but it also highlighted a rift between MLS and the union about the way that developmental players should be paid and treated. USSoccerPlayer.com's Ian Plenderleith explains.

The Salt Lake Tribune published a piece on how Freddy is handling the coaching change at Real Salt Lake - considering he specifically went there to play for John Ellinger. Ellinger was removed as coach last week, but remains with the club in another role.

There's another soccer movie coming out on June 1st. It's called Gracie. Check out the trailer here.
