> United Play to Draw With 10-man Revolution
Desperate for a victory after opening the season with three consecutive losses, D.C. United spoiled a solid performance by falling asleep for the first 30-seconds of the 2nd half, allowing a soft goal. Then they saw the New England Revolution go a man down for the final half-hour but weren't able to grab their first victory of the season, settling for a 1-1 draw.

D.C. United officially signed Guy-Roland Kpene on Thursday, just in time for last night's game against the New England Revolution. Kpene, played at Dowling College before United selected him in this year's supplemental draft. The native of Ivory Coast had to await visa approval before officially joining United's roster.

US Club Soccer has announced that a record number of National Cup applications have been received. Over 1,100 Boys and Girls' U12-U17 teams have applied to participate in US Club Soccer's signature event. Space is still available in select age groups at all 2007 National Cup VI Regionals. William and Mary men's soccer head coach Chris Norris announced the addition of defender Nicholas Orozco (Moseley, Va./James River) to the Tribe's incoming freshman class.

Charlie Sheringham scored his first stateside goal for Crystal Palace USA in a friendly. Combining the game with some Football in the Community work beforehand, Palace joint managers, Jim Cherneski and Pete Medd, gave run-outs to those who didn't feature in their opening day defeat against the Charlotte Eagles last week. Sheringham played a full 90 minutes alongside Alan O'Hara who was recalled from his loan period at the Cleveland City Stars.

---- Notes ----

The Washington Freedom has announced its roster for the Summer 2007 U20 program.

The PDL Piranhas will kick off their 2007 season at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex on Friday, May 11 at 7:30 p.m. at home against West Virginia. The Hampton Roads W-League Piranhas open their season at the Sportsplex on Sunday, May 13 at 3 p.m. hosting Richmond.

D.C. United will collect soccer equipment throughout May to benefit the U.S. Soccer Foundation's Passback program. Passback collects new and gently used equipment, including cleats, shin guards, soccer balls and goalkeeper gloves, and distributes it to DC-area after-school soccer programs. Fans who donate an item will receive a "Buy One, Get One Free" ticket voucher, valid for any 2007 D.C. United regular season home game (with the exception of Aug. 9 vs. Los Angeles).

Player and volunteer registration for the Montgomery Soccer (MSI) Fall 2007 program is now available online at their website.

Due to hotel availability issues, the Boys and Girls U12-U14 US Club Soccer National Cup VI Finals have been moved back a week to July 28-31. The Finals for the younger age groups will still be contested at Springwood Park in Burlington, N.C. and the dates and locations remain the same for the older age group finals.

New league rankings for WAGS, NCSL, NVSL, and WISL were posted on Thursday.

English FA Women's Cup is on Fox Soccer Channel Monday at 12 noon. It's tape delayed, so don't read scores online if you want to watch. The match features Arsenal and Charlton Athletic.

Freddy's got a new coach - and one less teammate. Real Salt Lake relieved John Ellinger of his coaching duties this week, replacing him with Jason Kreis, the all-time MLS goal scorer. Kreis played his final MLS game last weekend, and will now focus all of his attention on turning the team into a winner. Ellinger - somewhat surprisingly - is staying on as the team's Technical Director. Kreis' retirement hasn't yet received the attention it deserves, but he's a sure thing for the Hall of Fame.

Speaking of Real Salt Lake, their owner, - Dave Checketts, has just pledged $7.5 Million for a youth soccer complex in Sandy Utah. This is relevant to our area in that it adds further evidence to the positive trend of surrounding professional stadiums with world-class youth facilities. Our kids are only going to get better when playing on quality fields in the shadows of professional players and coaches.

Marc Connolly of USSoccerPlayers.com praises homegrown U.S. talent for leading the way in MLS scoring through the first month of the season. One look at the multiple goal scorers also shows us the names of Jozy Altidore, Barrett, Kenny Cooper and Chris Rolfe. Anyone see a trend emerging?

Steven Goff of the Washington Post explains the MLS TV deal and why United played on a Thursday night on national television. It was a pretty good crowd last night I must say, especially considering New England has no major marquee name draw and it was the first weeknight game of the season. Barra Brava and Screaming Eagles were out in force, which really helped the atmosphere. The wine and cheese side looked pretty thin (and of course quiet). Driving through the city to the game though, I saw what seemed like thousands of people at outdoor happy hours all dressed up with no place else to go. How about sending some interns out with handfuls of free tickets for happy hours before the next Thursday night game and see if we can get some new weeknight regulars to come by RFK before leaving the city for the 'burbs after work?
