---- Boasts ----

AC United demolished Ukrainian Nationals 7-1 in U.S. Open Cup Region I qualifier with goals from JC Cole, Pat Crawford, Danny Skelton, Lou Karko, Luke Strutt and Tony Tamanini.  United will next face Vereinigung Erzgebirge Club from Eastern Pennsylvania this Sunday in the Region I quarter finals. They are joined in the round by Aegean Hawks of DC/VA, who play Greek American Atlas of NY. The two finalists from Region I advance to the full US Open Cup competition, which includes teams from USL and MLS.

The Hampton Roads PDL Piranhas announced the signings of seven additional players for the 2007 season, including five local PDL "veterans" who are returning to play for the area's new PDL squad. These players will join USL1 midfielder Jeff Bilyk, defender Steve Danbusky and forward Jakob Fenger who signed with the team last week.

Six of Virginia's Cavalier athletic programs, including women's soccer, have been honored by the NCAA with public recognition awards for their latest Academic Progress Rate scores. To receive the award, those programs posted multi-year APR scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. The NCAA is honoring more than 800 Division I teams for the achievement.

Montgomery Soccer announces three teams who have advanced to the semi-finals of the Maryland State Cup competition; Girls U13 MSC Mustangs (Coach Carolyn Fox), Boys U14 MSC Dragons (Coach Friday Johnson), Girls U16 MSC Santos (Coach Jim Bruno). They will compete May 19th for a place in the State Cup Finals.

FC Frederick announces three teams have reached the MSYSA State Cup semi-finals;  U17 Girls, U13 Girls, and U12 Boys. All three teams will play on Saturday, May 19th, time and location to be determined.

SOCA has honored ten of its graduating players who have committed to play soccer in college next year; Amy Hemenway (Virginia Cavaliers), Maria Owen (Liberty University), Kelly Schorling (Kenyon College), Emily Moody (Bates College), Emily Stratton (Methodist College), Liz Nuesch (Christopher Newport), Ben Burruss (University of Mary Washington), Colin Lawson (Hamden Sydney or Bridgewater), Matt Martin (Lynchburg College), Tyler Herold (Mary Washington).

Reston FC striker Casey Ellerman is the latest member of the club's class of 2008 to make a commitment to a NCAA Division I college program. Casey will be attending school and playing soccer at Miami University in Oxford, OH. The 2007 US News & World Report college rankings lists Miami University 21st among the top public universities in the nation.

---- Notes ----

Bid on D.C. United's Virginia Tech game worn jerseys to help benefit the victims of the tragedy in Blacksburg last month.

D.C. United and ESPN are sponsoring a Banner Contest at Thursday night's MLS game of the week vs. New England at RFK. Kick off is at 7:30. Check out the link for details and rules. Grand prize is a 42-inch plasma TV. See you there!

The Rowland Cup semifinal between Maryland FC and the Baltimore Colts FC is this Sunday at 11:00 AM at Bonvegna Field. The winner will meet Baltimore United Sidekicks for the final. The Rowland Cup was first played in 1914 and is Maryland's open competition.

Ticket packages for July's FIFA U-20 World Cup Canada 2007 have been selling like hot cakes for the last 12 months. Exceeding all expectations and hitting the 600,000 mark last month on the eve of the Official Draw, local organisers are already certain that the 16th U-20 world finals will be the largest single-sport event in Canadian history.

---- Editor's Corner ----

Landon Donovan interview - will he be Beckham's Captain?

Bruce Arena interview - I hope no one in DC still drinks Red Bull. With half our former team on New York's staff, they don't need any more help from us!

United Coach Tom Soehn spoke to Steven Goff on his blog about the current state of the team and things to come. The team is on a 6-game regular season losing streak going back to last season, yet was picked by many to be an MLS Cup favorite this season.

Richmond Strikers are requesting a letter writing campaign to help them secure new fields. Even if you're not from their club, if you play against them or attend tournaments (ever heard of a little thing called the Jefferson Cup?), then this impacts you. See what you can do to help improve the field options and quality for one of Virginia's top clubs!

Stop play before lightning Strikes! Here's a good piece on US Youth Soccer's web site about playing it safe during stormy times.
