D.C. United open their MLS home campaign Saturday night at RFK. United began the new year on the road, falling 2-1 to the Colorado Rapids in the nationally televised grand opening of Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Denver. Josh Gross also was back at practice Wednesday and is expected to play after recovering from a mild concussion sustained in Mexico two weeks ago. [ full story +]
> County Denies SOCA Special Use Permit On Wednesday April 11th, the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors voted 5-1 to deny SOCA's special use permit request which would have enabled them to build a home on the ridge above South Fork. Bobby Johnston, the head women's soccer coach at the University of Tampa and a former James Madison University soccer player, has been named assistant women's soccer coach at his alma mater. Johnston, who has coached at Tampa the past five seasons, led the Spartans to the NCAA Division II semifinals last fall, when the team won a school-record 18 matches. [ full story +]

In a season-ending news conference at his 1st Mariner Bank headquarters, Baltimore Blast owner/investor Ed Hale announced that the MISL will welcome three new teams, and possibly a fourth, next season. Soccer Association (SSA) Storm U13 girls won the MSI March Madness tournament
with a 4-0 record, 21 goals for, and no goals against. The final featured a 5:0
win over FC Frederick Royal.

On Tuesday, fans and
sponsors gathered at the Capitol Hill Hilton for the United for D.C. Fifth Annual First XI Charity Kick-off Luncheon. The fundraiser for United's
non-profit arm was a great success as close to 200 people filled the
Presidential Ballroom to hear United's co-managing partners Victor MacFarlane
and Will Chang speak about their first few months as owners of the club. Both
spoke of the importance of continuing to fulfill United's mission statement of
winning championships and serving the community.
In girls' high school
soccer, the Potomac News reports Battlefield and Culpeper high school girls' varsity
teams met Tuesday night at Broman Field for the first time since last year's
Cedar Run District Tournament semifinal match. The visiting Battlefield Bobcats
left Broman Field with a 3-1 win, which exacted a little revenge from last
year's loss to the Devilettes in the semifinal match that was decided by
shootout. The two teams collide again Friday (tonight) at Osbourn Park.
The Battlefield JV girls were also victorious over the Devilettes (2-1) on
Tuesday.
In other girls' action
earlier this week: Woodbridge Vikings won over Gar-field Indians 3-1, Osbourn
Park shut out Stonewall Jackson 7-0, and the Forest Park Bruins girls surged to
victory over Hylton in their district opener 5-0.
In boys' soccer action,
the Forest Park Bruins and North Stafford Wolverines played to a scoreless tie
Wednesday (4/11) in the two schools' final non-district contest. Forest Park goalkeeper
Brian O'Connor stopped all five shots he faced for the Bruins. Tommy King
tallied six saves for North Stafford.
In other boys' action this
week: five different players scored each of the Bobcats' goals in their 5-0
victory over Culpeper, the Freedom Eagles opened district play with a 2-0 win
over Potomac and their first win of the season, Osbourn Park shut out Stonewall

Vienna Oakton senior James Leith has signed his National Letter of Intent to play soccer at Division I, Radford University. A midfielder, Leith has appeared in the Virginia State Cup finals for
the last five years, clinching the championship title in three of those years,
most recently in 2007 with BRYC Premier 88. James was a member of the Olympic
Development Program Virginia District and State teams in both 2002 and 2003. He
traveled internationally to participate in the Mediterranean International Cup,
in Barcelona, Spain. On his high school varsity
team he has twice been named to the Virginia AAA Concorde District Team.
D.C. United announced
today it will host the second edition of the D.C. United Super Cup, a single
elimination full side 11-v-11 invitational soccer tournament, presented by
Anheuser-Busch. The tournament will feature 16 elite Hispanic adult teams
from local leagues and be held over several weekends in April and May at the
RFK Stadium Auxiliary Field. There will be a cash prize of $5,000 for the
Cup winner and $2,000 for runner-up. In addition to the cash prizes for
the finalists, the top four finishers will receive a full set of 20 new adidas
team uniforms.
D.C. United
announced today the club will serve as a sponsor for the Capital Coed Soccer
League's 2007 Spring Coed Soccer Celebration ("SCSC"), which will be
played April 14-15, 2007 at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool fields on the
National Mall. Winning teams will each receive a set of 2007 season ticket
packages to D.C. United home games.
The United States Soccer
Federation has approved Maryland to host a National "C" Coaching License Course again this summer. The course will be held at the
Maryland SoccerPlex in Germantown,
MD over the week of August 4 -
August 12.
USIndoor recently announced a new certification program for indoor soccer and multi-sport facility operators beginning this
June. Individuals who successfully complete the program's course and exam will
receive the designation, "Certified Arena Operator" (CAO).

Stoichkov moves on -
Former D.C. United midfielder Hristo Stoichkov has left his post as the head
coach of the Bulgarian national team on Tuesday to take the top coaching job
with Spain's
Celta Vigo. Stoichkov had been with Bulgaria since 2004. He spent the
2003 season with the Black-and-Red, seeing time in 21 games (nine starts) and
notching five goals and had five assists in just 901 minutes of play.
Trialist - Jamaican
international Nicholas Addlery has joined D.C. United on trial this week. The
forward was most recently with the Virginia Beach Mariners (United Soccer
Leagues), but found himself without a team when it folded. Addlery played his
college ball at California University in Pennsylvania,
