D.C. United opened their 2007 MLS campaign in disappointing fashion on the road, suffering a 2-1 loss to the Colorado Rapids in the inaugural game at Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Denver. United saw their winless streak in Colorado extend to eight matches (since the 2000 season), while Colorado won a season opener for the first time in club history.

United Soccer Leagues announced today that the PDL franchise rights for the territory of Hampton Roads, including Virginia Beach, have been acquired by the Hampton Roads Piranhas, a 13-year member and 2003 champion of the W-League. The club will begin play in 2007, assuming the schedule previously established for the Virginia Beach Submariners.

45,000+ Fans watched the CONCACAF Group-A qualifying tournament in Honduras last week, only to witness the shock elimination of defending U-17 World Champions, Mexico. Haiti and the hosts, Honduras advanced as CONCACAF qualifiers to the FIFA U-17 World Cup Korea Republic 2007, August 18 - September 9. They will be joined by the top three finishers from the Group B tournament that takes place April 28 - May 6 in Kingston, Jamaica from a field of competitors that includes Canada, Costa Rica, Trinidad & Tobago, USA and the hosts Jamaica.

> U.S. U-17 Men Fall to Ireland in Friendly
The U.S. Under-17 '91 Men's National Team fell to the Republic of Ireland, 2-1 on April 5 in their second match of the 35th Mondial Minimes International Tournament in Chantonnay, France. With the loss, the U.S. finished last in the three-team Group D and will now move on to the consolation bracket. The U.S. will face Cameroon, who finished third in Group A with Russia and France, on Saturday, April 7.

U.S. Women's National Team head coach Greg Ryan has named the 18-player roster that will face Mexico on April 14 at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, as the USA begins the stretch run to the 2007 FIFA Women's World Cup. The match will be the opening game of a doubleheader also featuring the hometown New England Revolution against the expansion Toronto FC.

The Westminster Wolves Soccer Club (WWSC) U-12 girls won the 2007 MSI March Madness tournament after a tough penalty kick win in the semi-finals against the Cleveland Blues of Ohio lead to a smooth less turbulent 5-nil win over the more local Ashburn Premier Gold.

With the regular season over, MISL named their ALL-MISL teams, which included two players from the Baltimore Blast. Sagu made the Second team in the Goal Keeper position, and Michael Lookingland the All-Rookie team as a defender.

Emmy Bush, former DC Stoddert Pride player and daughter of former DC Stoddert Chair Graeme Bush, returns to the area this weekend with her Syracuse team to play in the Kicks Against Breast Cancer Tournament at the Maryland SoccerPlex. 

U.S. Soccer announced their Summer National Coaching Schools schedule. A, B and C courses will be held in multiple venues across the country on June 2-10, June 16-24 & July 14-22 - with the June 2-10 option at Virginia Wesleyan.

The Richmond Kickers added four more players to their roster last week, including former Atlee High standout Charlie Howe, who was also a starter at Virginia Tech. Howe is a midfielder, as is former Charlotte star Evan Harding. The other signees are forward Ricky Schramm (Georgetown) and goalkeeper Mark Murphy, who played at Mt. St. Mary's.

The Soccer Organization Charlottesville and Albemarle (SOCA) will seek approval of its expansion project special use permit at a Board of Supervisors hearing on April 11, 6:00pm, County office Building. The project proposal consists of an outdoor, lit, synthetic surface, full-size soccer field; a small, indoor soccer field with synthetic surface; two mini-soccer fields suitable for pick-up play and training; and the club's permanent offices. Supporters are urged to attend the Board of Supervisor's hearing on April 11 and speak in favor of the project.

The Hampton Roads Piranhas' will play a 12 game W-league schedule for the 2007 season. The Piranhas kick off their 13th consecutive season at home Sunday, May 13 against their in-state rivals, Richmond Kickers Destiny. Home games are played at Foster Field on the Virginia Wesleyan College campus.

In conjunction with the updates to the State Assessor Course, U.S. Soccer will offer four Regional State Assessor courses in 2007. Two coach/mentor instructors assigned by the Federation will teach each of the courses, and U.S. Soccer will cover the cost of the meeting rooms for the four regional locations. Deadline for requesting attendance for Region 1 is April 11.

Loudoun Soccer announced the Loudoun Valley HS soccer team is offering to train with Loudoun Soccer players on Saturday, April 14 at Harmony Intermediate School from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.  Coach Hacket and the Loudoun Valley coaches will share some of the training techniques that have helped get them off to a strong start this season. Players will be grouped by age from U9 through U12.  Please RSVP to Mike Reles at west@loudounsoccer.com if you want to attend this free session. Players should wear their game day equipment and bring a soccer ball and water.
