The owner of D.C. United's MLS Season-opener opponent tomorrow has purchased a 10 percent stake in the famous Arsenal of London. Stan Kroenke, owner of the Denver Nuggets, the Colorado Avalanche and the Colorado Rapids of Major League Soccer, said he had purchased a 9.99 percent stake in Arsenal Holdings PLC, the soccer club's owner, from ITV PLC. On Saturday D.C. and Colorado will open the newest soccer-specific stadium in MLS - built by Kroenke. [ full story +]

> U.S. Youth Soccer Championships in Arkansas for 2008 The U.S. Youth Soccer Association announced on Tuesday that North Little Rock will host the 2008 U.S. Youth Soccer national championship series. The Arkansas State Soccer Association will serve as the local organizing committee for the event scheduled to be played at Burns Park Soccer Complex, July 22-27, 2008. Some 185,000 players on more than 10,000 teams are eligible to compete for the U.S. Youth Soccer national championships, which is the culmination of a year-long series of competitions for boys and girls. United announced yesterday that Radio America (WACA 1540 AM) has been named the club's official Spanish-language radio partner for the 2007 season, the eleventh year the popular station will carry United matches. As part of the agreement, all 30 United regular season games will be broadcast live on Radio America and on the United Spanish Radio Network (Radio Continental 1390 AM and WLXE 1600 AM in the D.C. area, and WYSK 1350 AM in Fredericksburg, VA). > Kenny Arena Becomes a Coach at Mason George Mason University's men's soccer head coach Greg Andrulis has announced the hiring of Kenny Arena as an assistant coach. Arena played three seasons in Major League Soccer as he was with the NY/NJ Metrostars for two years (Feb. 2003-Dec. 2004) and then played with the DC United during the 2005 campaign. He is the son of former National Team coach Bruce Arena, and was a volunteer assistant for UVA last season. [ full story +]
> Bobby Smith Earns Induction to Hall of Fame on Veteran Ballot Former US National Team defender and three-time NASL all-star Bobby Smith was elected to the National Soccer Hall of Fame as a Veteran Player it was announced on Tuesday. Along with Mia Hamm, Julie Foudy and Alan Rothenberg, Smith will be inducted into the Hall of Fame in Oneonta, N.Y., in a ceremony on August 26. [ full story +]
> D.C. United Obtain Former Terp Burch From Columbus Crew
D.C. United announced the team has acquired Marc Burch from the Columbus Crew in exchange for the club's 2008 3rd round natural Supplemental Draft pick. The six-foot, two-inch Burch saw time in seven games (five starts) for the Crew last year after being acquired from Los Angeles. The forward made three appearances with the Galaxy in 2006 after being selected in the second round of the 2006 MLS SuperDraft. Burch played his senior year at Maryland, where he scored the game-winning goal in the 2005 College Cup final against New Mexico. [ full story +]

---- Boasts ---- The University of Richmond women's soccer team joined over 25,000 other runners in the Monument Avenue 10K road race on March 31. The Spiders planned this activity as way to raise money for the Massey Cancer Center. Assistant coach Brooke Roney organized a fundraising effort that applied the efforts of the entire team and the SpiderSoccer alumni base to the task of raising money for this important cause and they raised over $4,800, with pledges still coming in. The efforts of the team were featured on Channel 8 WRIC news, in the Richmond Times Dispatch, and in releases by Sportsbackers.
Lyndsey Wilcox, the latest member of the Reston FC girl's program to commit to a college soccer program, has made a name for herself as a tough, hard working midfielder who always has a smile on her face. She will attend Bucknell. Others already committed; RFC 89's Eric Zuehsow to UVA, Julianne Rickers to U of Miami, Katie Baumgardner to Ohio State.
---- General Notes ---- The Premier Arena Soccer League will kick off its 2007 summer league between May 5th and 19th. The men's and women's league registration deadline is Wednesday April 18th. The Southwestern Youth Association has announced that registration for the 2007 Cardinal Cup Tournament is now open. This annual tournament started in 2004 with 70 teams and grew to 137 accepted teams in 2006. They expect their largest field ever in 2007.
The U.S. Soccer Foundation, the major charitable arm of soccer in the U.S., has announced that The Toro Company has joined its Partners Resource Center for a three-year term as the Foundation's Supporter for Turfgrass Maintenance Equipment. Toro will provide Foundation Grantees and Community Partners with expertise in planning maintenance equipment needs for soccer fields and complexes, and will offer discounts on turfgrass maintenance equipment such as mowers, utility vehicles, aerators and line painters.
The United States Indoor Soccer Association (USIndoor) announced today the opening of online registration for attendees and exhibitors of its 2007 Facility Operators Conference and Trade Show. USIndoor's seventh annual conference takes place at the Adam's Mark hotel in downtown Denver, Colorado, June 14-17, 2007.
Former James Madison men's soccer player Andrew Walker (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial) has signed a contract with the Wilmington Hammerheads of the United Soccer Leagues Second Division, located in Wilmington, N.C. The USL2 is the third tier of professional soccer in the U.S. and is made up of 10 clubs that play from April through August.
The Richmond Kickers announced three recent additions to the 2007 squad with rookies Charlie Howe of Virginia Tech, Evan Harding of University of North Carolina - Charlotte and goalkeeper Mark Murphy of Mount St. Mary's University. The trio was discovered after attending the Kickers February 2007 player combine.
Midfielder Josh Gros will not play in D.C. United's regular season opener this weekend after suffering what club officials believe was a concussion during a Champions' Cup match Tuesday night in Guadalajara, Mexico. Gros, who started 79 games his first three seasons, returned to Washington yesterday for examination instead of accompanying his teammates from Guadalajara to Denver for Saturday's match against the Colorado Rapids. |
