Korrio Players to Watch
The Potomac Soccer Wire Korrio Player to Watch Award is intended to recognize exciting young players in the Mid-Atlantic region those who produce notable achievements or display exceptional talent. The award is open to boys’ and girls’ players playing under-14 or older, including those who have already begun their college careers. Selection criteria may include individual and team accomplishments, as well as meaningful off-field activities or evidence that the player has overcome significant personal challenges to attain success in the game.

Nominations may be submitted by anyone familiar with a player of note using the form at the bottom of this page. Potomac Soccer Wire's editorial staff will investigate all nominations and will make all decisions on which player(s) to recognize. With each new monthly announcement of players, a press release will be sent to regional media outlets and the awards posted on this page and in our popular email newsletter, which is sent every Tuesday and Friday to over 13,500 regional subscribers.

Korrio Girls' Player To Watch, February 2012: Elizabeth Ball
A sophomore at Deep Run High School and prolific goal scorer for the Richmond Strikers, Elizabeth Ball knows what to do when she gets near the net. She has scored 13 goals for the Richmond Strikers U-16 ECNL in just 15 games this season, and last spring, netted 20 goals as a freshmen for Deep Run.

Ball has been playing soccer for the Strikers since she was six, picking up the love of the sport from her uncle, Eddie Gray, and brother Christopher, who also played for the Strikers. She said she loves the competitiveness and the feeling when she scores and her team wins.

Korrio Girls' Player To Watch, February 2012: Katie Cousins
According to Rob Ukrop, Katie Cousins' coach with the Richmond Kickers' U-16 Elite girls team, the central midfielder has the potential to be a future game-changer with the U.S. women's national team.

"She has the ability to change the tempo of a game, dictates whether we go forward or whether we're going to play back," Ukrop said. "She thinks like a professional player in terms of her decision-making. She's built like a professional player. She's small, but she plays big."

Korrio Boys' Player To Watch, February 2012: Drew Romig
Still just 13 year old, Drew Romig's confidence and commanding presence, not to mention skill, are some reasons why he is the youngest-ever to be called up to the Richmond Kickers' U-16 Development Academy team, progressing from the Kickers' U-15 Elite team. It's also why he's in the U.S. U-14 national team pool.

"We always have to make sure that physically he can handle it, but he's trained numerous times with the 17, 18-year olds in academy training," said Kickers director of coaching Leigh Cowlishaw, "In games, it's a little bit different, but he's played against several players who were 17 when he was 13, and he's done very well and handled it very calmly."

Korrio Boys' Player To Watch, February 2012: Dalton Ruh
Dalton Ruh's Richmond Strikers coach Trevor Spencer says Ruh, a central defender, is self-driven and focused on the field, and describes him as someone who appreciates the opportunity to play. Ruh, he said, has accepted his role as a leader.

"I ask everyone in practice: Who's the hardest working player here? And everybody's going to say Dalton Ruh," Spencer said.

Though only 14 years old, Rue's already had an impact on his high school team at Collegiate, playing JV last year as a 7th grader and moving up to varsity this past season.
