Virginia to commemorate 2009 NCAA Championship prior to season-opener Friday night
1 Sep, 2010
A ceremony will take place Friday, Sept. 3 before the Virginia men’s soccer team’s home match to commemorate the program’s 2009 NCAA Championship. A national championship flag will be raised at Klöckner Stadium prior to the Cavaliers’ season-opening match-up against UAB at 8 p.m.
Virginia has won six men’s soccer NCAA Championships and each is represented by a flag at Klöckner Stadium. The flag marking the 2009 Championship will be raised at approximately 7:50 p.m., prior to the announcement of the starting line-ups and the playing of the national anthem. Current team manager and 2002 National Player of the Year Alecko Eskandarian will raise the flag as a representative of the program. In addition to last year’s crown, the Cavaliers won NCAA titles in 1989, 1991, 1992, 1993 and 1994.
Virginia finished last season with a 19-3-3 overall record en route to the NCAA and ACC Championships. The Cavaliers won three exhibition contests during this preseason, defeating VCU (1-0 on Aug. 20), VMI (4-0 on Aug. 23) and George Mason (2-1 on Aug. 28).
