10 Feb, 2010Loyola University Maryland freshman defender Kevin Curran (Upper Township, N.J./Ocean City H.S.) has been selected to travel with the U.S. Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program Region I team to South Africa this month for a slate of games.
Curran, who played in all 22 games, starting 22 at left back for the Greyhounds in 2009, will depart New York on February 12 and travel with the ODP team to Johannesburg for a 10-day journey.
The squad will play five matches against South African teams, see areas surrounding the 2010 FIFA World Cup, visit historical and cultural sites and train at local soccer facilities.
Curran and his teammates will play their first game on Monday, February 15, against Amazulu F.C., followed by a game the following day against Kwanaloga Select. After a day off, they will face the Bidvist Wits on Thursday, February 18, and Supersport United on Friday, February 19.
The soccer portion of the trip culminates with a Sunday, February 21, match against the Kaizer Chiefs.
As a first-year player for the Greyhounds in 2009, Curran made his collegiate debut on September 1, starting at left back for Loyola against Villanova. He finished the year with a pair of assists and helped the Greyhounds advance to their school Division I record third-straight NCAA College Cup.
