Three Patriots named to the VaSID Men’s Soccer All-State Team

21 Jan, 2010

The Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) announced its annual All-State Team for men’s soccer on Thursday morning. Three Patriots were named to the team for their outstanding play during the 2009 season.

Junior forward Victor Freeman was the lone Mason selection to the First Team. Seniors Richard Edgar and Sean Kelley both made the Second Team.

A Second-Team All-CAA selection, Freeman missed the first five matches of the season but provided an immediate offensive spark when he returned to the pitch. Freeman led the team in goals (7), assists (4) and points (18) during the season, and ranked seventh in the CAA in both goals and points. Three of Freeman\'s goals were game-winners.

Edgar, a Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award Senior All-America First-Team selection, was named to the All-CAA second team for the second consecutive season after contributing two assists and two points for the Patriots during the 2009 season. He earned the first NSCAA All-South Atlantic Region selection of his career for his stellar play throughout the 2009 season.

Kelley earned All-CAA honors for the second straight season and third time in his career after leading the conference in saves during the regular season with a total of 82. The Lexington, Ky. native started all 18 matches in goal and recorded a 1.00 goals against average with five shutouts.

The national champion University of Virginia men’s soccer team swept the major awards. Goalkeeper Diego Restrepo was named the Player of the Year, midfielder Will Bates earned Rookie of the Year honors and head coach George Gelnovatch was named the Coach of the Year.
